"Denso" Spark plugs
 

"Denso" Spark plugs?

Have any of you guys heard of them?
Ever since I got my new truck (see sig) I've been visiting some Harley and Lightning forums, trying to get some ideas on squeezing more juice out of my daily driver. (13.9 bone stock - not bad for a big fat truck ;) )

All the Higher boost guys insist on these plugs. Is there anything special to them?

Or should I just stick the NGK's I know and trust?

In all my 7's, I have never used anything by NGK's.

Well Denso stands for Nipondenso. Basically my understanding is that Nipondenso is Japans largest spark plug manufacturer with NGK being a close second. NGK seems to have the O.E. market cornered for Japanese cars. As far as the quality of them I feel that they are comparable to NGK. But NGK has never failed me and my rotory so I say "if it aint broke don't fix it."

Nippondenso changed their name to Denso, I think. Denso makes the Iridium plugs, or at least they are usually sold in Denso boxes. I think NGK is really the manufacturer.

The Iridium plugs did very well on some F150 Lightning test that I saw -- the least misfires of any of the plugs tested by far. I am not sure if that is truly representative of their performance in the car, but it seemed like an indicator that they do offer some advantages.

I think HKS markets some Iridium plugs for rotaries, but I have also heard of using some Iridium motorcycle racing plugs. BR10EIX is the part number and they are made by NGK. You will need a thin-wall spark plug socket (normal ones won't work) to install them. The HKS ones are expensive surface-gap plugs, but the NGK BR10EIX plugs are much less expensive, side electrode plugs that you can gap.

HKS Iridium plugs are made by Denso. So, you are just paying more for a "rebadged or name brand" spark plug.

I have mixed thoughts on the iridium plugs. I had a set in my now former 240sx. I don't remember what exactly happend, so I can't comment here.

So, in short, if you are going to purchase the "iridium" spark plugs, you're better off purchasing ones from Denso or NGK, as opposed to a rebadged HKS or some other "name brand".
