daily drivability

What are the down sides of a single turbo set-up like daily drivability,
Low end torque, and spool time?

Do u guys with singles drive really aggressive ?
is it hard in stop-n-go trafic or pull out of lights ?

Cheuk in Seoul 11-24-02 01:09 PM

No problems with drivability. Pulls harder than the twins down low and blows it away in the higher revs.

If this is a concern stick to the smaller singles with full ball bearing... APEXi RX6, GT35/40.

93redFD 11-24-02 01:43 PM

umm, the gt35/40 is not a "small" turbo, its little smaller than a t-78 and produces almost the same amount of horse power:)

enuttage 11-24-02 03:27 PM

Just to clarify, Cheuk *did* say "smaller" and not "small", as you quoted him as saying. ;) Suggestion is a powerful thing.

There's still some journalism left in me...quote 'em right, or get your ass sued off. :p

In regards to the question...both turbos Cheuk mentioned aren't going to give you the lag associated with some larger turbos. On the flipside, with the RX6, you're not going to get as much power. With the right mods and good tuning you'll probably pull around 400rwhp. I'm running the RX6 right now, and I'm getting no noticeable lag. In fact, I'd say according to my butt dyno it's less lag than the twins. Technically the twins may provide less, but I feel like I'm getting more pull, earlier than when the car was stock (which may have had to do with the condition of my turbos also).

Streetability is fantastic. Part of the reason I decided on the RX6 was for streetability and autoX. That's all I can really speak on, since I haven't driven the other turbos. Obviously, the GT35/40 is highly regarded 'round these parts though.

G'luck with it.

how fast will stock twins spool up

TailHappy 11-27-02 09:47 AM

I'll vouch that my RX6 is pulling harder everywhere (including faster spooling, and low end...like even at 2000rpm) than my old twins. In autocrosses it's easily spinning leaving corners in 2nd gear @ 10psi with race tires. But like enuttage, unfortunately other things were involved. I know my old twins had cracked housings (as usual), and my engine was swapped at the same time as the new turbos were put on......all of which probably played into the increased power.

As far as downsides........ My complaints so far certainly have nothing to do with power. I'm getting ridiculous underhood temps....to the point of melting the little plastic wire covers. That's probably due to too much gas and should be able to be tuned out. My car is a LOT louder, but that's mostly because I now have an open wastegate (keep in mind all kits aren't the same!). One of the little details I didn't think about beforehand. And I think I'm burning more oil than before. Not visibly through the pipe, but I'm just having to keep a closer eye on the dipstick. I've heard ball bearings tend to burn a little more.

Actually that's about all that comes to mind. When I was considering single turbos, I always believed lag was the big downside, but I think technology has advanced so far past the old twins, that rule of thumb doesn't really apply anymore.

Good luck!

Single Driveability

All I can say as a RX6 owner is that for daily driveability this thing is the best. It is a well behaved monster that only kills what you point it at and seldom, if ever bites you unless you seriously screw up. I am not fully tuned (waaaay rich) and probably pulling around 350-360 RWHP. Dyno days are coming up.

That being said, do not mistake those words as a suggestion for others to follow. Just going single involves a boatload of crap :bash:, money, blood, tears, swearwords :cursing: and time. DO NOT go single thinking you can set and forget------those days will be gone forever. See my sig for details

But if the question is can a single behave on the street, have a good life expectancy, handle like an exotic sports car and also annihilate most anything else it comes up against.. . . the answer is simply----You Bet your Ass!!!

TailHappy 11-27-02 01:41 PM

Well said, jeff48. I recognized the single swap was probably above my head, and I didn't want to risk a brand new engine, so I opted to pay too much to have it done professionally. Didn't want to skimp now and have it bite me in a major way in the future.......

Kingfish111,

You have a distuburing (to me) pattern to the questions you ask. Jeff will probably lose his temper over this, but do you ask questions like this to learn, or just enjoy the traffic it creates?

I have not seen any downsides to doing the single conversion yet. other than it cost a bit of money, and may not be emissions legal where you live.

so far i have been driving my setup for the past 5 months daily driving and have close to 7000 miles on the setup. Going from a stop is no different than any other car. In 1st gear you push the gas the car goes with out any hesitation, you pust harder it goes faster ;)

I don't see where all the people get there info talking about lag. most people that comment on them have either not driven a single turbo car or just go by what others say. And really you don't even have to get the car in boost for it to get going or up to speed pretty quick. It is pretty expensive to change over to single, since you need all the other crap to go with the turbo system. I would take a look at what you really want to do with your car and decide if its really worth spending the money on.

my current setup.
hks t45s turbo (older style same specs as to4r)
haltech ems, fuel system to support single
large streetported motor.

I have been very happy with the car so far. I would think people running the rx6 or the 35/40 have even better response due to the ballbearing.

as far as drivability its great, just has a lot more power when you want it.

Going single is all good with one exception - smog legality and cost.

The underhood temps are way less and the motor reacts much better to the single. I have a T04E and get fantastic response - actually too good.

There is virtually no lag and easier to drive than the stock twins as there is no bump in horsepower at 4500 rpms. The boost comes on earlier than stock as well (around 2500 rpms).
