Converting a N.A. 13b to a single turbo.

My buddy offered to take the turbo (a rebuilt garret) and intercooler setup off of his 2nd Gen eclipse with a thrown rod, and make piping to fit my naturally asperated 2nd gen 13b RX-7.

I already have HKS 2 1/2" catback free flow exhaust.

I know i need fuel injectors, a fuel pump, and an ecu off of a single turbo'd model, a new clutch, and a blow off valve.

Is there anything else I should know? I wanna know how much boost I could safely push without endangering the engine.

Thank you.

1. his turbo is probably too small.

2. turbo'ing a nonturbo is difficult. there are all sorts of clearance issues. check the 2nd gen section FAQ. It would be easier to swap in a turbo motor

3. you will likely need a standalone

+1. bare minimum, you would need a turbo ecu and harness. the first gen dsm turbo might be big enough, but anything after that would probably be too small.

for a series 4 car it is easier to keep the N/A harness and redo like two wires, one of which is for the twin scroll solenoid which should be eliminated if you don't have an s4 stock turbo. the turbo harness actually makes it more difficult to swap because the alternator wiring is different and some other technicalities. You would be best served to get an Rtek ECU used, get the 1.7 along with some 720cc secondary injectors (but not Venoms, get Greddy/Denso or RC or something)

whatever turbo he has on his friend's dsm isn't going to work unless it is a full T4. That's a damn big turbo for your average DSM. And then you will need to get your hands on a T4 manifold (HKS cast is cheapest and easiest option).

easiest and cheapest option here is to buy a turbo longblock off a running car, retain the N/A harness, use an s5 turbo and manifold, run about 12psi through a custom FMIC (unless you want to spend money on the T2 hood) and make about 230-250ish rwhp. You will have a mid 13 second car trapping over 103, and beat up on stock 350Z's all day long. I pulled STi's on stock turbo easily, and lots of others have done it too.

So ditch the lameass DSM turbo unless he has a TD06-20G. You could use that with the Greddy manifold because the Greddy kit comes with a 20G. The TD05-14B on the manual tranny 1G cars is smaller than our stock turbo. The stock 2nd gen turbo is closer to a 16G, which is considered an upgrade for DSM's. Unfortunately the stock turbo manifold is proprietary and won't allow you to bolt anything up to it except a hybrid turbo which utilizes the stock hotside (like a BNR hybrid or the Knightsports turbo)

What if your plan is to use the s5 stock turbo, can this still be eliminated??

I have just gotten back my 1991 convertible. It survived hurricane Katrina,It has been in an auto coccoon for a few years, and the fuel pump has gone out. But that is not for this thread. I have replaced the engine once before, but am now thinking about replacing the engine with an engine/turbo setup. Any thing I need to know. Silly question right....

Converting N.A. S5 to Turbo

I'm new to all this forum stuff but I want to convert my 1989 N.A. RX7 FC3S S5 to a single turbo. I'm trying to look for turbo kits for my model but nothing seems to come up for a N.A. FC. I already have a full Racing Beat Road Race exhaust and an Apexi Intake. Could someone please help me out?

There is a fair bit of additional work to make it happen and then the rest of the drivetrain will be a significant weakness. I'm sure there are already numerous threads outlining what is required here on rx7 club as well as the other large rotary forums, google search the sites if the internal search isn't giving you what you need.

welcome to the board. :)

you'll pretty much be on your own with that. there aren't any complete kits (at least not that i know of) out there. your options are: build your own "kit" from scratch, find a T2 powertrain, or sell yours and look for a T2. you're probably going to be in for a long, costly ride no matter which you choose.

Not to sound harsh but if you want a kit then you are far better off returning the car to stock to maximize its value, then sell it and buy a turbo car. You will have a long road of fabrication, head scratching, making mistakes, breaking things, trying to find increasingly rare parts, and hemhorraging from the wallet.

I mean, if you could sell the RX-7 for $15k and buy a Turbo II for $35k, you're probably saving money. T2 engines alone seem to be in the $7-9k range, which I would think of as a core to rebuild and not an engine ready to drop in.
