Borg Warner EFR 9180 Build
 

Pretty excited my parts started arriving today. I am starting to repair and better my recently acquired FD. So far I have ordered RA 2mm super seals, Turbosmart eboost2, Full-Race twin scroll manifold, and the Borgwarner EFR 9180. I feel like a little kid all over again. Everyone on here has been talking about the EFR series buy no one has put one on a car yet so hopefully I can tell u guys what I think about it and have some dyno sheets up for you.

Have you started your build yet? Any pictures(mainly of the turbo)?

I will most likely start removing the engine at the end of the month. And the turbo hasn't even been released yet. Borg Warner started from the smallest to largest so mine will be available the 2nd week of April, buy may be sooner. I will keep u guys posted.

Tommorow I will be removing the engine and spoke with Geoff and he said turbo is released on the 19th so I should have it couple days after that.

Well removed my engine today and opened it up. Found that the reason the engine was siezed up was because the water seals had gone and the prior owner just let the car sit like that so the rotors rusted up. Now I am looking for two rotors.

Sent out my lim to RG machine shop in puerto rico to get the semi pheriferal ports put in it last week. And my engine down to Philly to get the irons resurfaced, semi peripheral ports put in the housings, get the engine dowell pinned and lubricación externa ( external lubrication). So there should be alot more updates from now on.

I have 2 3mm weight matched rotors if your interested. One has a small seal press mark on one of the faces but I it was from the first build. I had 40K on my rebuild before I decided to re do my set up for the circuit. Rotors are in pretty good condition. I'll let them go for pretty damn cheap if you'd like em. All edges in good condition, and seal grooves un-damaged:icon_tup: Lemme know.

out of curiosity have you seen the Side port/PP housings Turblown is doing? they look awesome.. I'm out of my comfort zone and don't know much about PP's but they look nice, and I'll most likely experiment in the future with semi pp's. But post some pics up!!!! and for christs sake..did you ever get that EFR?

Nope no turbo yet.... And I managed to save my rotors... I put them in a 5 gallon drum filled with brakefluid and all the rust came off and all the seals came out... They look new now lol. But thanks for looking out. As soon as I get my stuff back I will post up pictures. I am very interested to see how they do the semi pp on the stock lim since they actually have to weld material on cause there is nothing there.

No turbo yet. Still waiting. Will be getting my engine back from Don Roberto in Philly back at the end of the month when I go down for dragmania. And my lim should be done soon by Raul Gonzalez at RG machine shop in toa baja puerto rico. I can't wait to see that engine in the car and idling. I feel like a little kid just thinking about it.

if u dont mind me asking, what are your HP goals.

I want a 500-550 tune for street and for drag racing pretty much whatever the turbo and engine combination can put out with race fuel. I will be running a microtech ems. Y?

you ordered a turbo 6 months ago and have not got it yet? is this normal? i would be pissed

I preordered it six months ago and the turbo has not been released it. I should have it mid September.

And I really haven't been pressing the issue cause my engine or car isn't ready yet but if it were the only thing holding me up then it would be a problem. If that time comes and still no turbo I will just change it for a gtx42

I was told 30-60 days delivery from time of order. Seeing that is a 30 day difference in eta, I see that as a likely drag out to 90days +.
Might just replace my TO4Z and wait until these things are in steady supply and some numbers about to see real world results

For the new EFR series, that kind of wait is very normal. In fact, I know a lot of orders that have no set date, they were just left "open". BW is now the sole turbocharger provider for quite a few racing series (including ALS and many others) this year as well as providing these new EFR units for some OEM companies. The little aftemarket stuff like you and I (regardless of our quantity) is small beans and comes secondary. I have 5 of these unites orded for various cars and customers, and depending on the size EFR, some of the wait times are crazy and "open ended" as I stated before.

Turbo show up yet?

Nope, just got tired of waiting and went with a 72mm BW with the race cover

^ thats a shame. Did you check with anyone else? i'm sure there's one somewhere just wating for an owner.

Idk if i have the right to go into more details but long story short from what i understand Borg warner is having issues with the company that produces their chra's.

There is a good alternative, one that is between the S372 and the 9180. Makes better top end power than the 9180 but spools quicker than the S372.

No 9180 have been delivered just yet.

Its not the CHRA castings, but rather the turbine housings. They finally have someone who is producing them up to BW standards, and its just taking some time to get enough turbos produced to ship to the distributors. I was lucky enough to have a handful already, but not as many as I would like.
