Best Intercooler for a T78 set up.....
 

I just got my car back on the road, breaking it in with little or no boost for 1,000 miles, but I need to upgrade the intercooler.

I was already going with the Greddy stock mounted IC for a Single set up.

Will this be sufficient?

I've heard different stories about FMIC being a bad choice for daily drivers, because they block air flow to the radiator.

I do not plan on running over 15lbs.

The motor also has an aggressive street port, to the point of where it borders a race port, nice lopey sounding off idle, and it also has 3mm seals now.

I did a search, but really didn't see a major discussion on the two choices.

I will be driving the car on the street, and occasionally at the drag strip for a couple of passes.

I am using the EFI PMS, and the Greddy set up has a 52 mm gate and Greddy Type S BOV.

I'd say go wtih either one of the M2 stock location IC's or go front mount.

The Greddy SMIC isn't very big, & has crappy ducting.

I running a Greddy 3 row with an aluminum rad, temps stay between 86 and 98c. Although I don't run the A/C yet.

The large M2 intercooler does look good, but I'll have to see about relocating the battery. Thanks for the info, any more will be gladly appreciated.

If you want something that will bolt right up, go with the Greddy front mounts. The 3 row is the king.

I've decided to go with the larger M2 stock mount intercooler. I will have to relocate the battery, but it looks like the best choice for what I need.

I was about to suggest a M2 SMIC too. With a stock USDM nose, a FMIC *looks* like it does not get to exposed.

With a SMIC you also dont have to worry about changing the radiator to the upright position. And with any SMIC you have that whole sleeper look going on.

You won't neccessarily overheat with a FMIC. Especially since you have a single turbo now, the water temps and air intake temps will all be significantly lower. You should be worrying more about your air intake temps hence the fmic so you don't have to worry about heatsoak or anything

Have you considered a v-mount set up?

Honestly, I feel like that is the way to go. With a vented hood, you really get huge air flow to both the radiator and the intercooler and excellent ventilation for the engine bay.

At D1 I saw three different V-mount set-ups in the pits/retail displaqy area. You should check out that option, if you are seriously looking at a cutting edge development.

Endless had that radical red Amemiya bodied car with a Signal v-mount set up.

Calvin with the crashed FD has a v-mount. I didn't get a chance to ask the make. It seemed the smallest of the three and the piping was too twisty for my liking.

For me, the white Apexi FD that took 3rd/4th (?) had the best design, in terms of intercooler size and unrestricted piping set-up (minimal bends).

I have a FMIC I can use right now, but I would think that using it would mean having too upgrade the radiator. That, and I don't want the IC showing. Trying to have a sleeper, if thats possible.:)

You dont necessarily have to upgrade your radiator when you go witha a FMIC. You can stand your stock one upright. However you should get an all aluminum rad anyways since stock rads are prone to failure from the plastic endtanks.

Update. I went with the Pettit Cool Charge III.

I have to relocate the battery, but it should be more than enough for up to 20 lbs.

It was ordered, and hopefully shipped, today.:)
