Best Borg Warner Turbo for 13B?
So I just found out my current turbo is on it's way out and need to pic up a replacement. What is the best bang for the buck Borg Warner turbo? My goals are 350-400 hp, I have a large street port 13bt and a undivided HKS T4 manifold, 3" V-band down pipe. Where is the best place to buy BW turbos? I have a BOV and wastgate so I do not need an EFR series.

Speedjunkie has an EFR7076 turbo on his FD and his car spools like crazy in low RPMs. I think he started building boost in the 2000's RPM's. We are also up in Colorado where the air is thin. He think he is making in the upper 300's WHP up here in CO.....so might be more and faster spool times down closer to sea level.
He is running the 1.05 A/R T4 set up. |

IF the above is your hp goal you would do better w the smaller of the S300 series. there are a lot of shops marketing BW turbos and many attach their own tags to them which creates confusion. i suggest you think in BW part numbers from their site the two turbos to consider are 177280 and 177283 the 177280 is very close to a GT35 w significant (hotside) advantages. as such, it would be a better fit for you given your power objectives. the 177283 is similar to the TO4Z, PT67 and is a mid range power generator. 500-550. here's how they compare: BW 177280................................ 6.383 compressor average area (sq inches) GT35............................................6. 386 BW 177283...................................7.06 compressor average area TO4Z, GT500r, PT67.....................7.002 here's where it gets interesting.... the hotside comparison: BW 177280 & 177283............................. 6.31 GT35r............................................. ........5.171 GT3574 and Turblown TD61................... 5.885 an additional option for the 177280 and 177283 is a 1.00 A/R hotside P/N 177209 the both the 177280 and 177283 come w .88. the .88 may be your best fit. i have dyno experience w the 177283 (1.0) and the big hotside wheel delivers on the rotary. i had stable EGTs at 1550 at 8650 RPM, 23 psi around 514 SAE rwhp. that is the same large turbine wheel which is on the 177280. low EGTs. low engine stress. howard |

I paid $694 shipped for my s366 with the 90* compressor housing from The boost lab.
i felt as if BW engineered the 90* housing it will bet better than just a 90* coupler... and cheaper (free option) I also got the smaller divided housing but you can pick from a couple different housings. |
I got the .91 divided housing on my S366. Still in the process of install, but I'll let you all know when it's tuned!

I Picked up my S360 (177272) from The Boost Lab as well. I had them weld on the Vband flange on the turbine housing and they supplied the other half of the vband for the exhaust side. The vband is tapered to provied a better seal. Ordered it with the .88 open exhaust housing to go along with my HKS T4 open manifold.

compressor area.............................................. 5.524 stock FD compressor area..................................5.972 BW 7670 from BW compressor map: 43.5 lbs/min at one bar or 328 hp 52 lbs at 20 psi or 391 hp 61 lbs maximum at 44 PSI boost or 459 hp i see nothing from an airflow aspect that interests me re the 7670 versus other turbos. yes, it is made from neat stuff, the stainless hotside and titanium hot wheel... but the compressor map tells the tale. purely judged on airflow output for the rotary there are a load of turbos to consider that are a better fit. for instance, silverfc88's 177272 turbo which is very very close to the GT35 but w a larger hotside. howard |
I have ridden in speedjunkies and I have a GT3574R in my car. I like both turbo's but from different perspectives.
His turbo rocks in the lower to mid rpms and it seems to do fine up top. Remember that we are pretty high altitude at 6,000+ ft and when we do mtn runs we are 9-10K high. His turbo has power down lower which does very well in tight twisty roads...it spools fast and the car moves well. I think he is running mid 20's PSI or more?? My car doesn't spool as as quickly in the lower rpms as his but it does a good job. I think mine has great usable easy power, and pulls like a raped up in the mid to top end. If I run closer to 17PSI (14-15ish sea level, altitude adjusted) my car seems to have another gear. It's like I pick up a huge amount more power than say running 14-15PSI (11-12PSI sea level). Both boost levels come on nice and do very well even at the higher altitude we run at. I am happy with my turbo. I have ridden in speedjunkies old set up (500R) and that rips up top more so, and I didn't like it as much as his new turbo, or the turbo I have on mine. either way, I think mid 300's to low 400's is a lot of power in an rx7. I am not sure what my car makes to the wheels, but I would guess it is high 300's to low 400's at my 17PSI ish max boost level I tuned to, but I run the car closer to 15PSI (remember altitude) so 12-13PSI sea level. |
Compressor maps (and dyno pulls) seem to be the best place to start but dont tell the full story. A good friend ran a raft of single turbos on his stroked evo....I know...not a rotary but reasonably relevant in this case... (HKS T04z based one, GTX35, etc) The last one he ran was the EFR 8374. He was blown away by the transient response of the turbo which was something you dont see in a compressor map or illustrated well in a single dyno pull. The on track performance of the turbo for picking up the throttle exiting corners and getting on full boost was way improved over the alternatives he has tried.
As that is the key focus of my build (response/midrange/torque/driveability and approx 350-400whp on E85) I am taking a chance on the 7670 with the 1.05 twin scroll T4 hotside with ext gate. Just waiting on it to arrive :( They are probabaly a more piston engine focussed turbo, but as per Howards flow estimates above I think it will deliver close to what I want at 20psi on E85 and should have some decent area under the curve. |

Thank you for the replies, this thread would make a good sticky.
I found the issue with my current turbo and I think it's going to hang in there for a few more months. I will need pictures to explain, but I found a 3" piece of steel slag in my turbine housing. It must have been hiding way in the back of the snail and fell out when it cooled down last week. Once I pick up a new turbo I will make a new thread and a trip to a dyno. |
you should try the S362 FMW turbo.
Or, you can go for the EFR 8374 turbo (similar to above, but with the best new technology). Both are fairly responsive and very good power and high boost potential. |

So the piece was only 1.5" but it was still freaky to pull out of a turbo. I started it up last week and she builds boost and spins at idle.

Which Borg Warner EFR series turbo is closest in size(if no exact match, which one is the next closest going up) to the S366? I have the S366 now, but I would like to try something slightly larger that could potentially spool faster.
