Bad chra? or?

Car smoked like a freight train this morning. Engine runs "perfect". Smoke is a little steamy-gas-oil smell. Smoke is even coming out around DP vband behind turbo and looks a little wet from the mixture. I did have a seal pass thru this turbo 2 years ago and never had it checked out.

Then I get to work and get a $21K tax notice!!!!!!!!!!!

sounds like the turbo, maybe pull your plugs see what they look like. just a thought. when a rotor oil seal went on me i pulled my plug and oil was dripping off, cranked it over and oil blew all over my fresh new paint job lol. OUCH 21K huh..dam bro i feel for you.

First check out that your PCV or oil catch can/vent did not become blocked/clogged.

I had the symptoms of what you describe once at a race when the filter on my crankcase vent got pushed against the tubing it was on so that the tube sealed against the flat filter top blocking it. Unbelievable amounts of smoke and oil use.

I was able to get the sump venting again and that alone was enough to reset the ring seal in the turbo chra and never had a problem again.

I since redid the vent/catch can system with bigger tubing from multiple areas and no filter- just holes in the catch can top.

I've seen several bearings get knocked out because of chipped turbine wheels. The assembly is way out of balance once that happens.

sk8world 01-28-11 04:59 PM

Crankcase is vented and not blocked. Really thinking its the turbo. I have oil dripping out of the downpipe were the V-band is and the rest is steam. So since its oil and water cooled just sounds like thats it.

When you had the oil control rings fail did the car still run fine? I did reuse the old metal riings on this build just replaced o-rings.

It sounds like your turbo. My car still ran but smoked life something i never seen before. In order for me to re-start it i had to take the plugs out, clean them off, heat them up with a torch, put them back in really fast then start it and drive or else they fould out.

sk8world 01-28-11 05:47 PM

I will pull apart this weekend

Good idea. Is there any oil resemblence coming out the intake? you take your Intercooler pipe off and take a peek?

mono4lamar 01-28-11 06:22 PM

If you have oil dripping from the turbine housing v-band it's likely the turbo. If it's engine related you would only have a TON of smoke as it would be "burning." Here's the whole list of possibilities; high oil pressure issue, oil control ring relation, plugged oil return line, plugged CHRA or lastly a blown CHRA.

Take the turbo off and look into the manifold to see if one runner is caked with oil or if both are. Next try to use a hose and get into the return line and blow air down it. If you can get your mouth up to the flange or line that's the best way but it's no fun.

There's a couple other things to do but I'll keep it simple for now. Also, what turbo are you running?

sk8world 01-28-11 07:03 PM

Gt4094r

sk8world 01-28-11 08:53 PM

The other thing is the smoke is more steam then oil being burnt. Reason I think it's the turbo. Otherwise it would have to be a combo of things. Since the turbo is both oil and water cooled that's what I am thinking it is. But the turbo does spin nice and easy as it has always done.

mono4lamar 01-28-11 10:06 PM

I know you're not new in town but what does your oil look like? I would also check your coolant fittings on the CHRA there could be a residual leak...

bumpstart 01-28-11 10:14 PM

i think its prudent you spend money first on a coolant system leak down and CO contamination test

if that smoke includes steam then it has to be coming form somewheres ,, and the CHRA is the least likely spot

Pulled turbo off and front cover had fresh oil in it. Turbine side was just playing nasty! Full of burnt oil. Looking down into the manifold the rear runner is clean front runner shows signs of oil leaking down on one area of mani . My thoughts are after shut down it leaks down that one side hence why the rest of the runner is clean of any oil trace.

And yes I have been around enough just never had a turbo go on me before. I always thought I would loose it with a seal going thru it and I am thinking that's what happened years back. I am going to pull the manifold off and check each exhaust port better.

pics of backside and manifold. Notice the oil only is going down the one side of runner. I would think if it were coming from the motor it would be covering the entire runner.

mono4lamar 01-29-11 08:52 AM

I've had it so bad that when you pull the turbo manifold off the block a "sippy cups" worth of oil ran down the side of the block.

What was your oil pressure looking like? Did you check the return line?

sk8world 01-29-11 10:18 AM

Pressure is fine and mani is loose just not off yet and no oil leaking from the block side. Oil color is normal. I am about 95% it's the turbo and none motor related. Just going to send it in to verify.

sk8world 01-29-11 01:38 PM

Pulled exhaust housing off and I was right the wheel in far back was trashed. I am sure it being so far off balance is the culprit. Post pics later today. Also pulled manifold and both exhaust sleeves were dry no signs of oil.

:icon_tup: get that biatch fixed so you can do wheelies:)

MOBEONER 01-29-11 05:07 PM

Man u got me thinking now. My GT35R has some chipped exhaust blades and I was gonna send it in to replace it but I got antsy and put it back on the car because I didnt feel any play. Now I am
Worried this will happen to me as well.

mono4lamar 01-29-11 05:21 PM

Good to hear you have it figured out!

pic of the exhaust wheel.

I will have this forsale on the parts section under "GT4094r with Lightened/ clipped exhaust wheel"

Kinda crazy that I been running this all along and went the 6.44 a few months back.

WoW...that's exactly how mine look like. how long did it last since you chipped the wheel?

rex3 01-29-11 08:56 PM

Car is going to be a beast with a fresh turbo.

2 years. Over the last year I would notice a oil burning smell every now and then but nothing terible. If its a ball bearing aint shit you can do so run it till it goes!
