Anyone else Standard HKS wastegate creep?

Mine always has... i never really worried about it to much as the car was tuned for about 1 bar or so ~ 15 psi... but i just put a dump tube on it (just a dump, not routed back into the exhaust) and it hit 1.14 bar or 16.53 psi... thats getting up there. its a 40mm, and you can hear it open at about 10lbs or so, but it never stays there, even when the motor had stock ports it would creep. i was thinking i could weld a pipe to the hks flange, and then weld another flange to the pipe to make it work with a larger wastegate... but i don't really want to spend 500 dollars on another wastegate.

any ideas, or does my wastegate just suck balls....

oh i see i could upgrade to the racing wastegate, as its a 50mm but still, the standard is what comes with the t04s kit......

Do the Ebay wastegates suck ass? i know my ebay manifold i got when they first came out was a POS.... any info on the quality of the wastegates by them?

Harrison, I've heard from people that some of the ebay wastegates get stuck shut, there for over boosting the hell out of your motor. I had a Deltagate (delta CREEP) it caused me to spike like 28lbs before. I'd just buy a TiAL wastegate, like I did. It's awesome, no creep, no spiking. You pretty much have the same turbo as I do, I don't think you need anything bigger then a 38mm.

vspecpgt 06-22-05 01:46 PM

what kind of flange does the tial have? compatible with an hks manny?

FD Rey 06-22-05 01:50 PM

well, I've seen some HKS manifolds that I've seen, have like a universal flange with 6 holes, one for 35-38mm gates, and the others for 40+mm gates. The 38mm gate uses two bolts

yes i had horrible boost creep with the standard 40mm hks wastegate, when i switch from a t04e to a t04s. i upgraded to a real hks 50mm and it holds perfectly. if i were you buy the 60mm just in case, if the price is right. but the 50mm is plently

See this thread, the HKS is only 32mm...

No boost creep here - I blasted past a slow-moving, eight-car pack on a two-lane hwy this morning; the HKS std. held/holds 16 psi rock-steady. Plus, the bastards got an overdose of the open w/g.:)

vspecpgt 06-22-05 02:55 PM

hmm, what is everyone running on Turbine size? i've got a divided .84. but still for 695 dollars i could almost upgrade to a bigger better turbo....

Crusader_9x 06-22-05 04:40 PM

I got a t04r with a .96 ar p trim and when i had 3 to 2.5" exhaust it would hold boost all day long. After i changed to a 4" to dual 3" system the boost guage would just start running laps after 5k rpms.

I plan on changing to a q trim which should help by flowing more air and ima gonna try waht carl did and port the wastegate some. If that doesnt quite do it then ill go up in wastegate size.

vspecpgt 06-22-05 05:28 PM

hmm.... still, instead of upgrading the wastegate, maybe i'll just do a new fuel system with 1600's and 720s, then i'll just run higher boost... it just pisses me off i can't have a low boost of 10 psi and a high boost of 15.

kabooski 06-22-05 08:58 PM

got the standard HKS
no issues

A/F/EGT's mixture also plays a part in creeping
and if you have a 3 1/2 or 4 inch DP etc
it can also cause creeping

If everything goes to plan
I'm going to push the PT67 and the HKS standered hard (and my motor..lol)
HARD!
My tuner is flying in for the NOPI races
Might be re-tuning my car this weekend at 25-28 PSI..stay tuned :)

WarspeedFD 06-22-05 11:07 PM

I've just finished my single upgrade last week with the Standard HKS and it's boost creeping like crazy! I have the ProfB II and programmed the wastegate to open at 7psi and still creeps up to 18psi. I thought I blew my new motor when the engine bogs at 18psi on half throttle. Thank god it didn't. I ordered a 10pound spring (currently has 14psi) and see if that will help.

MARTIN 06-22-05 11:27 PM

I have a 10lb and on 4th gear it creeps to 15.

Kabooski you are a crazy mofo. 25-28lbs on that pt67. I am starting to invision a sheet that says 650 onner

vspecpgt 06-23-05 07:54 AM

well i only have a 3 inch dp mp and exhaust, so its not to free flowing. not sure what i'm gonna do yet, but this is gay... maybe i'll try one of those new metal substrate cats, they are supposed to be really good, cut down on noise, emmisions, and smell.

Carl Byck 06-23-05 12:14 PM

Roger, High boost is not the problem, it's low boost, so therefore the standard is fine for you. try holdin less than one bar on a 4th gear pull, bet you can'tkeep it below 15 psi. BTW, I may tune 25 psi in three weeks on that turbo if I do not have excessive EGTs. Carl

ultradef 06-23-05 01:29 PM

Maybe its just coincidence, but it seems to me like a lot of people with "smaller" (.82, .84, etc.) hotsides are having trouble controlling boost with the HKS standard wastegate. Just an observation really... :)

I've always heard great things about the Tial 38mm, I'd give that a try.

FD Rey 06-23-05 02:07 PM

Harrison, look at your manifold if it looks like the TiAL 38mm wastegate would bolt up then go ahead and get one with a 9psi spring on it. You'd have low boost at 10 psi, and high boost at 15psi just like me. No need to redo your fuel system, or change out your turbo, or weld a flange to the manifold. If you redo the fuel system you'd have to retune it, and that will cost you even more money. It's not so hard man, buy a 38mm Tial wastegate and you'll be fine.

If you want to cut down on noise get a borla xr-1. Changes the sound of the car from high raspy whine to a low deep rumble. Just use one of these in place of a cat. Cats suck

agreed. And I dont even have a fast spooling turbo.

Cause we are spoolin like a mofo :D

Exactly...I'm a fan of quick spool myself. Hopefully a bigger wastegate will solve the problem...if I remember correctly you were having a similar problem with the HKS wastegate, right? Have you fixed that yet?

WarspeedFD 06-26-05 07:46 PM

Has anyone try run without the spring? I'm thinking doing an experiment to see if that will control my boost problem.

jacobcartmill 06-28-05 01:56 AM

i have a .96 qtrim exhaust, hks standard wastegate and it doesnt creep at all. sits right at 10-11.

fwiw i also have a small streetport and stock exhaust ports.
