Aem smart coil / IG1A location
I’m posting this here cause I figure many people w single turbo prob have upgrade ignition coils as well.
My question is is there any way to mount the smart coil under the 3rg gen intake / rotary works throttle body? i currently have the hec 715 Bosch coils w s x4 igniter , they are on a custom bracket and fit nicely under there. My tuner I will be using talked me into switching to Haltech elite and running aem smart coils. I have not seen one in person so not sure of the size. I really don’t want to change my entire set up does any one have any data on dwell times w the elite running the Bosch coils? Thanks john |
Any body try to mount there?

It's doable though tight and in all honesty I don't think I'd bother again. If you're going to take the time and don't want to mount it to the chassis I'd fab up a pseudo coil on plug bracket similar to what riceracing built years ago. I've never had to go above 3.4ms to light anything off at peak boost/rpm.

I've mounted the IGN-1A coils under the intake manifold with a custom bracket before. Was a pain in the butt but doable.

thanks guys , I’m making the switch at recommendation of tuner, I have ac and not sure where else to put them.
I have a good guy for welding I think I can make a bracket w his help. I don’t have the coils yet so wasn’t sure how big they are. |
The other consideration of mounting them under the intake is heat. That’s never a good thing for the coils. They’ll perform better and last longer if remotely mounted in a cooler location. They’ll fit nicely down on the frame rail with a custom bracket.

I’ve thought about that, but I have a fd engine in an fc. I have ac and just not really a lot of space for them.
The current set up w the Bosch coils seems to be ok in the spot they are at |
C Ludwig,
have you you ever ran the Bosch coils w a elite? is the any data on how far to push dwell times under boost. And could a microtech x4 box be ran by the elite? are the ign1a coils going to make a huge difference over the current set up? i would love to not have to change them but probably will at tuners recommendation |
Yes its very possible with a custom bracket. but its very crowded under there and you need to delete all the EGR junk from under the UIM. see photo below for how i did mine, works great. i started with the sakebomb mounting brackets for the coils and welded up a custom bracket to bolt those to the UIM

Thanks for the pics guys, I have a catch can mounted where your coils are on the fc , but looks like a good spot
on the fd intake looks like plenty of. Clearance to the block , makes me feel good that there is that much space |
Do you have any more pics of your mounts you made did u weld mount to intake?
thanks |

Besides the potential for water damage, I wonder if anyone has opened up the front wiper motor cowl to place these coils in there, then simply run spark plug wires through firewall. This cowling has SO MUCH room on a 1st Gen. I'm trying to figure out what all I want to keep up there to clean up the engine bay.

MSD make an spark plug feed-through post for this purpose: https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...6963f6c9dc.jpg Although this setup is probably designed for V8 muscle cars that only have one coil running to a distributor. The main drawback of this area I think would be the extra length of ignition lead you'd need to run, which would then be located quite high up on the firewall. In the case of a LHD car, this would be right up above the brake booster. That...and you need to terminate 2 lots of ignition leads. |

At the risk of making you redesign your whole system, I wanted to turn the turbo around backward on my 1st gen with the inlet facing the cowl and make that entire area an air box feeding the turbo.

I think Defined did that on a three rotor
|
Thanks for the ideas ,I think I will have enough space to put them where there are now.
Also the 4 rotor rx7 is amazing |
