62-1 questions (A/R & wastegate)

Hello all, I am needing some advice.

I am putting a 13bREW in my FB. I am shooting for 400whp on pump. I would like to keep the boost around 15-20. I have plans to use a:

Fresh REW with a medium street port
Turbonetics 62-1 - non BB, 360 thrust bearing
HKS cast manifold

A/R - I want to keep my spool time as decent as possible, for it will be mostly street driven. Would an .81 be to small? Would a .96 be too laggy? I don't want it to run out of steam up top, but at the same time I would like to see full boost before 5000 rpm. 15psi at 3500-3800 would be good for the street, I think.

Wastegate - I have also been debating between an HKS standard 40mm and the 50mm Race. I won't be boosting below 15psi but I don't want any spikes if it's a nice cool night..

Thanks guys, all help is appreciated.

Two things. First being that a 40mm should do it however with you wanting that small amount of boost you would benefit from the larger wastegate. Also I would go with the .84 as really you aren't looking for the turbos peak horse power as really your looking for 400rwhp so the .84 would spool that turbo pretty quick and the 400rwhp goal should be obtainable. One thing you may want to go with since your sticking with pump gas is some alky/water injection.

420 at 14 lbs with 62-1 96 a/r it spools at 3500 rpm's / 50 mm wastegate. Now i run 20 lbs dont know the h/p but does well. :fingersx:

When you say it spools at 3500, do you mean you hit the full 14psi then or that it just starts making boost?

Thanks for the help guys!

Pretty much goes full spool at 3500, and wastegate starts to open.

Wow, that's sounds pretty good. As long as it's the Non-BB 62-1 that you have, the .96 is looking more inviting. I think I am going to go with the
50mm wastegate, even though it's $600. Pay to play I guess..:D

Thanks

You can also use 2 38mm Tial wastegates. You can buy both for around $400. I used to have the 60mm HKS GT wastegate before and now I changed to both Tial and they work great. I have better boost control now. Also had the 62-1 with .96 a/r and made around 400 whp at 17 psi with 93 octane fuel. That is with an S4 engine in my FC. The response was reasonable. If later you want to make more than that you will need a bigger turbo. The most I could get out of it was 450whp.

If I was using a custom manifold I would consider this route. However, the HKS only has one runner for a wastegate. I know some people say the manifold is a little crude, but it's easy, relatively cheap, and I know it works.

I also thought of using a 46mm Tial. I know some Tial's use a round flange and some a square. Is it the same size as the square flange on the HKS manifold? If not, does anyone sell an adapter or would I have to fabricate one?

Thanks

13b-re stock port,
HKS log manifold,
HKS standard wastegate,
62-1(81 a/r),
3" DP into 3" single..
it did 279.6@6950RPM on pump gas at 10psi on a mild tune, there was no boost creep not even @14psi. I saw full 14psi around 3500 RPM

i have a 62-1 i put down about 477

I am really thinking of going with the .96. I have a few tricks to help keep my spool time down.

Ceramic coat manifold
Turbine housing blanket
Wrap downpipe
Short intercoolerpiping
Medium size intercooler core

I know it depends alot on my tune also. Fortunetly I have a good tuner relatively close. Steve Kahn is about 4 hours away:D I plan to have Gotham build my engine also.

Thanks

don't limit yourself. use the .96.

Yeah....FWIW a 35R on stock FD ports bleeds off 3-4psi (running 15lbs) after 7K using a .84 exhaust housing. It reaches full boost at/shortly after 3K though.
