4" exhaust setup?

i did some searching but it didnt narrow it down to much....

for those running a 4" what mufflers/ resonators are you guys using?

only thing ive really found in 4" is magnaflow and borla... neither come with a tip and the ones they sell arent the nicest... just curious what you guys run... sound clips would be awesome too:icon_tup:

muibubbles 02-18-10 02:53 AM

hmm yeilded a lot better results typing in borla... lol... anyone using a company other than borla?

arghx 02-18-10 07:56 AM

the big question is, can you handle the noise? Would you get sick of it after a year?

darkphantom 02-18-10 08:50 AM

/\ i did. couldnt stand it besides the vibration from the motor mounts. end up going with a exhaust cut out valve. reduces noise & vibration

no a/c
hbp
etc...

i also quiet coated the car so cabin noise really isnt bad... plus i figures worse comes to worse slap another resonator on it? ahhaaha:lol:

Run a 4" DP, midpipe, and any catback you want if noise or looks are a issue.

Ordered parts from Burns, we'll see how loud this sucker turns out to be.

can i do a 4" dp 4" mp to a 3" exhaust?

will the disrupt flow? will it be useless to do 4" then?

Goodfella has a 4" exhaust I believe. He might chime in on noise and fabrication.

What are your power goals?

muibubbles 02-18-10 03:45 PM

power goals are 450-500 as of now.. i know its a bit over kill but its only costing like 200-300 more to do full 4" then get a downpipe...

XLR8 02-18-10 04:00 PM

A 4" will give you better response from what I have heard. Like most things, there will be a trade-off. If you can handle the noise increase for the street, than there is a benefit by going with a 4".

Other than this, I have no input. I have never personally ran a 4" exhaust, so I can't speak from experience.

Sure can, we did it here on a 20B car, ran 4" up to the RB cat back. The car sounded nice and practically stock as far as noise levels. Made over 500whp@10psi so I think you'll be fine.

Heat wrap the entire sysyem, its reduces noise a whole lot more than even an extra silencer does. I wrapped mine from headers to in line with the diff, couldnt believe the difference it made, and didnt even originally do it for this reason.

And 4" dp then 3" is better than nothing, thats for sure.

Where it becomes a real benefit on an RX I dont know though.

Your insurance company is gonna hate you for all the noise violations your gonna get.

I'd love to hear clips of it. I have a 4", 17" long can from them that I haven't gotten around to installing yet. I know this isn't the right way, but from just holding it on the back of the exhaust at idle, it seems it was going to do a nice job.

Sean...maybe I'll be seeing you about the exhaust after all. :D

BlueTuner 02-20-10 06:26 AM

I Running a straight custom 4" in my FD without s CAT, and for me I love how it is. My father complains about it being too much noise but, I was behind my car in the streets driving( I was driving my fathers because he wanted to drive the FD) and i can barely hear it with the windows up and music playing on low. The pitch of the engine through the exhaust is not very deep so to me its not that loud. Basically to me if a V8 camaro with a exhaust kit on it drove next to you i probably would hear the V8 more, if that gives you a good example of how loud it is.

Performance wise- Its very nice

I believe i am using a ApexI muffler, cant remember which one.

I will try to get a sound clip

I have an entire post called - 4" Complete Exhaust System Build- in the single turbo section of this forum.
It is very detailed and has tons of photos of fit, tig welds, videos, and dyno runs.
You won't be let down.

Goes to show the limitations of the 'search' button, I've posted about this many many times :)

Here's my thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/review-specs-4-inch-turboback-magnaflow-exhaust-676685/

I love the big bore exhaust. Quick spook, sounds awesome. Yes it's loud..... my solution was to get an Apex'i GT Spec catback (3.75 inches so close enough to 4 for me, lol) with the option to run the ATS spring-loaded silencer. I havent used the ATS much as the GT Spec muffler is much bigger than the one it replaces so made the sound levels reasonable.

I'm going to look into the Titanium lava rock heat wrap by DEI for my midpipe and catback piping in an attempt to quiet things down a bit, thanks StavFC for posting that up :0
