3 mm apex seals?
 

i have heard a lot about changing from the stock 2 mm apex seals to 3 mm apex seals when putting a bigger turbo on a rx-7. is this neccesary?

no it is not ... and it is a topic with many different views .... search through the single turbo forum for a thread about apex seals. Much has already been discussed there.

iirc correctly stock 2mm seals will flex at high boost.

I chose to stay with stock 2mm seals in my engine because I was getting new rotors anyway and there didn't seem to be any clear advantages of the alternative replacements. I think a lot of motors get 3mm seals because it is cheaper to machine rotors to accept bigger seals than to replace them. They may have other advantages and disadvantages just the same, but that does seem to be one of the motivations for running 3mm seals.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of consensus on this topic, and there has been much discussion. As spyfish007 notes, a search of the archive is probably a good place to start.

I heard you need to run 2 mm seals if you are thinking of running high revs - 7k to 10k.
