3-Bar Map Sensor Question...
 

I have upgarded my engine management system to the Apexi Power-FC with the Datalogit, now my question is, do I need the 3-bar map sensor to attain my wanted numbers. I now have a very large street ported motor, full Greddy T-78 turbo kit, 550cc primaries, 1600cc secondaries, RX-7 store extreme fuel system (fuel rails and such), Denso Fuel pump (TT Supra), 3-inch Greddy DP>Pettit resonated midpipe>HKS Hi-Power cat-back. I am on the list for the Tuning session at Pettit racing on the 30th with Steve Kan and am looking to get a good drivable tune in the lower 400 range. Nothing too crazy, something that will run well without straining the engine too much. Pleses let me know about the 3-bar, if it is needed or not, slightly important.

3 bar map sensor would be for high high boost, such as 30 psi. The stock map sensor cannot read past 2 bar. If your looking for a driveable tune, your probably going to tune for pump gas, so the stock map sensor would be fine.

On the other hand. If you ever wanted to run higher boost. You would probably need to have the car retuned when you install the 3 bar. The map resolution is different, there are more cells to account for. So why not install the map sensor now. The GM sensor w/ harness is under $100 and it is really easy to hook up, took maybe 30 minutes. The hard part was finding somewhere to mount the thing.

Actually, isn't the FD run a funky MAP sensor which goes up to about 17 or 18 psi?
I know it's not a true 2-bar MAP.

My stock MAP sensor topped out at ~16psi (1.15 kg/cm^2) based on my datalogs. If you think you need more boost than that (and want to control the fuel in proportion to boost, which you do), then you need a MAP sensor that can read higher. The GM 3-bar sensor works fine with the PowerFC.
