12A NA + 89-91 TII Turbocharger

I'm currently collecting all the go-fast bits to bolt onto my 12A NA.

I've bought and am awaiting the delivery of

Genuine Bosch 044
Surgetank
Carter Gold 4594 72gph 6-8psi
2x550cc TII inj, 2x900cc siemens inj
450x300x76 FMIC
Recoed 89-91 TII turbocharger
Sandwhich plate for oil feed (goes under oil filter)
Sard Rising rate 1:1 FPR (from ebay?)

The engine is a rebuilt 12A NA derived from an 82 12A and a 85 12A.

I used the latest 12A rotors 9.4:1 with the lightest weight, and brandnew housings. I used the tall port sidehousings and had them extend ported, as well as the exhaust ports. The engine has clearanced rotors, as well as a 3 windowed rear stationary gear. I used 12AT apex seals, with 12A springs. Straight cut corner seals with RX-8 springs. 12A side seals and springs. RX-8 oil cages with 12A o-rings and springs.

The engine is beautiful internally and only has 3500 miles on it.

I'm using a JDM spec 12AT gearbox and 4.44 open centre diff.

What power should I expect, what boost should I run. I know the S5 turbo isn't the largest and will probably have boost drop at high rpm, will it support 14psi all the way to 8000rpm? am I better running 14psi and shifting where the boost drops, what will make the most average power, not really concerned out peak...

I have a wb02 sensor and controller on way, will be using Megasquirt ECU, not that it really changes stuff. I've allready got the CAS working in my motor, and its running fine :)

around 225rwhp... that turbo will be your restriction.

So if the compressor can only flow 225rwhp, how do I get this from it at the lowest possible rpm? and hold peak power for as long as possible?

ie what boost are you suggesting I run, i will be using whatever spring is in the turbo to start with but I've heard past 14pound isn't safe, is that the ideal setting for my car?

12at

Hey mate , as i guide i have a internally std unopened 12at the only mods i have is Series 4 intake manifolds 2 x 12at injectors 2 x 13bt injectors and a hiflow 12a turbo (turbo has std 12a rear housing with series 4 core front housing and wheel)
Running a MT4 computer with a 12at dizzy.

the turbo starts getting out of it's efficiency range around 12psi +... but on my 12a turbo setup i was running 16psi daily. i had a tubular long runner manifold, 3.5"dp, 3" exhaust, etc... i was more than happy for a while :)

See comparing your setup to mine on paper, my turbocharger should be larger and better suited. S5 intakes are meant to flow better. I will have full fuel and ignition control. Exhaust might be the department letting the car down, might only be using 2.5".

So 12psi on the s5 turbo is a good choice of boost?

No_Rotor_RX7 02-22-07 05:03 PM

honestly overall power between the s4 and s5 stock turbos are not very different. i often see more peak power and almost always see more torque from a well setup s4 turbo. the s5 will yield more midrange typically.

either way you'll get your 200rwhp goal no problem.

Jobro 02-23-07 05:45 AM

my goal is 270rwhp, but i'll be happy with 230

270..... i highly doubt you will see that from a stock s5 turbo, but a hybrid no problem! :D

exactly what i was thinking cheesemonster

some info on what a hybrid is

the turbo 2 core gets a 60 mm compressor wheel , t4 housing and custom back plate to mate the t4 components to you existing mazda center section/exhaust housing!also your wastegate
will be enlarged and wastegate door modified/enlarged to prevent unwanted boost creep. this is a direct bolt on! no fabricating nessisary.this turbo is capable of making 350 hp easily! full boost by 3,000 rpm's!

In Australia we call "Hybrid" Turbos "Highflow's". The guy I bought my turbo off also does these. It was double the price $225USD(for a reco s5 turbo) and $450USD for the highflow variant. I'm more interested at this point in time in getting more average power between 1000-4000rpm band than getting a big kick in the backside past 3000rpm

That said I do want to push the setup to the limit!
