Inīs & Outīs of HKS T51 R KAI Turbo

Hello all,

Can anyone tell me what is the largest size down pipe I can get to mate on to this HKS T51 R KAI turbo ? Where can I find it??

Also, can anyone recommend a good intake system for this turbo? I am planning on mounting my radiator in the upright position and I am also using a 3-row core GReddy FMIC in front of the radiator ... just so that you know the what the fittment might be like.

I have all the other mods on hand to go in when I decide to install the turbo ( fuel pump & reg, injectors, E6K, Boost controller and a GReddy Japan Off-Road exhaust etc)

Note - I do not need to pass ANY emissions and I am not running any cats in the present cat-back/mid pipe exhaust system.

Please post or email me directly if you have any info on this one.

TIA,

Please tell me you have a ported motor(the bigger the better) and are not just sticking a t51r on it..

Yup ..it's a pretty decent size street port.

What can you suggest ?

I asked you if you motor was ported because the bigger the port size the quicker the t51r will spool for you. If you put it on a stock port motor then it probably wouldn't spool for ever. There seems to be tons of people here lately who want to stick huge turbos on stock motors with stock ports, which doesn't work so well.

With the t51r you can keep the airpump if you want, but since you have no emissions I say get rid of the airpump, but you were probably going to do that already.

As far as intake systems, you wouldn't really need one, what you could probably use is a cone type filter like a K&N stuck on the end of the turbo. Or you can buy the "air suction funnel" that hks usa sells but I am not sure what that consists of. Again, just a cone filter would probably do you fine though. Doesn't get much simpler than that.

As far as for a downpipe, everything on the HKS t51r is V-Band clamped. If you are buying just the turbo then you would probably have to get the V-Band flanges and have a downpipe made. But www.hksusa.com sells V-Band flanges for the downpipe and manifold so I am sure you can work something out. They also sell the V-Band clamps too.

If you don't have access to a exhaust fabricator or someone to make you a downpipe then I might suggest getting the whole t51r kit.

Rotaryextreme has the t51r kit I believe so you could PM hims and ask him about spool time, lag etc. And he also had a low price for the T51r kits and just the turbos. Check out his site at www.rotaryextreme.com

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have the GReddy Airpump elimination pulley kit on hand ..just a matter of time to get rid of it.

I have the T51 kit with the turbo, waste gate, manifold etc.. just missing the downpipe. I also have the XS flanges for the down pipe to mid pipe connection. I have a v-band connection from the turbo to downpipe connection but I have not received it as yet. Still being shipped so I don't know exactly what size it is...so I don't know what the minimum size DP I can get. Providing that this v-band clamp (turbo to DP) is the standart size ..what size DP does that go with ..or is the v-band adjustable from 3"dp to 3.5" or heck even a 4"dp .. I'm thinking of going with a 4"dp...seeing that the rest of the exhaust is farkin huge no a$$ as well it will help spooling up a little faster too.

I'll pm those you suggested and toss a few questions their way but otherwise wadda ya think?

Um, just some advice. I have a TA51 compressor side on my street port 13b. I thought it was a good drag turbo. Its not. I don't make full boost (15 psi) till 6000 rpm. It's a 420 RWHP 14 second car. I'm getting a smaller turbo...

Freaky Monkey007 03-26-02 06:59 AM

hey fast 13b.. Attach a 50 shot of nazz 2 it and spray it when you launch 2 spool your turbo.. And you really need a B-Port for a TA51..

HKS has separate part number from al their kits. If your using their manifold, evrything should line up. You can get the down pipe from HKS. Carl...

Another good example of the wrong choice of turbo size for the application.!:)
That turbo should not be on anything that's running less than 27 to 30 psi of boost pressure.
For only 400 to 430RWHP the 60 or 62-1 turbos are difficult to better in spool up vs. power vs. cost!:)

Amen!!

I am going with this turbo also on a bridge port 13b, but I am working on a 3 rotor right now that is why I went with the big turbo. Chuck has it on his car and drives it everyday as a daily driver. but yeah you need a ported motor if you want any boost.

I have a Fastrax built T51, with the 1.04 A/R exhaust housig on my stock engine, i can get full boost at about 4000rpm...

rotaryextreme 03-27-02 06:17 AM

What's your definition of full boost? 14 psi? 20 psi, 30 psi? BTW, can you give me faxtrax's phone number?

Chuck

full boost for me on street is 15psi. On dyno i run 24psi and that can be reached about a little pass 5k rpm...
Jon has sold fastrax about a year now... some conflict between investors i think. He now works at a turbo development department of some company, and i should not post that on the forum without his permission....
