07-06-10 OGTA Meeting

Great meeting, perfect cool dry weather with late sunlight. Fantastic people, really nice cars.

12A’s reestablished their rule, as expected.

However the FC’s are showing promise. FD’s and RX-8’s and RX9’s are starting to show up, which certainly makes things interesting. We are learning all about back seats. However are still waiting to meet Lola.

Here’s the count:

3 SA’s = 4.5 12A’s (Cory, Donnie, Andy)
10 FB’s = 10 12A’s (Gene, Juno, Ray, Mike, Dean, Greg, Geraldo, Billy)
1 PrePro = 0.75 12A’s (Kristy)
5 FC’s = 2.5 12A’s (Collin, Colin, John, Peter)
1 FD = 0.33 12A’s (Jeremy)
1 FE = 0.125 12A’s (Holly)

That’s a Grand Total of 18.205 12A equivalents, not a record but a very impressive and colorful turnout. The calculus here is also very impressive, but I can’t take credit. Holly, Kristy and Crit did the math.

We tried Autotoxing some of the FC’s for the first time month, with Brett driving an FC. Not sure if this is going to catch on:

Here’s the Pics:

The SA Group:

Donnie’s real pretty SA

Cory’s equally pretty SA

Andy’s always pretty SA

The FB Group:

Ray’s The Silver One

Mike’s The Blue One

Juno’s FB/SE

Juno just got a new back seat off ebay, you know the kind they all say are useless

However Juno’s buddy show’s this is not the case

They always meet at the same place/same time. 1st Tuesday of the month.

Ray: I think Greg the Elder's car is Persimmon Red ('84 only color, pretty rare). Have him check the paint code on the VIN plate in the engine bay. Persimmon Red should be R7.

I guess Juno went back to the normal hood on her car, huh?

Good pics. Looks like you all had a good meet. Wish I was still living down in that area.

Kent, that paint on Greg the Elder's FB is no known Mazda color, he made it up himself. It's someplace between maroon and dutch chocolate color, if that makes any sense.

The hood decoration thing was just a weekend art project. Who knows what they'll try next. I think Juno is planning to start a Taxi company now that she has a back seat in her FB.

Dave, from time to time some of the guys will jump in a car or two and go cruise around for various reasons. Occasionally we'll have mountain runs or track days or auto crossing, plus some weekend events at people's houses or meetings over at Road Atlanta for ZoomFest, the Mitty and things like that.

These seem to be the keys to the success of the OGTA meetings, which have gone on for the last two and a half years:

1. Like Kent says, a consistent and convenient meeting time (for OGTA it's after work on the first Tuesday of every month)

2. A convenient, friendly and cooperative meeting location. (lot's of OGTA's either live near Suwanee or drive by on their way home; the local restaurants like us so much they regularly give us a 10% discount the dinner tabs and don't complain about our substantial presence in the parking lot).

3. Great folks (but all rotorheads are great, right?) and great cars (ditto).

4. An active forum thread, with regular posts and lots of pictures of the meetings (rotorheads love pictures of themselves). Here's the OGTA thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/se-rx-7-forum-35/old-guys-12as-club-meeting-675955/

5. A business card that can be slipped under rotary windshields; ours started as a joke, now everyone has a few in their wallets and lots of people first heard of the meetings from the card. Here's OGTA's card:

The good news is that rotorheads everywhere love to hang out and admire each other's cars. There are probably more rotorheads living around you than you think.

So find a time, a catchy name (the 1G Club; Rotary Support Network; 1st Gens for Obama; something like that), make some cards and have consistent meetings, even if only a couple people show up.

You might be surprised!

Convenient can be a relative term there Ray .

50 miles through ATL traffic without AC in 95 degrees at rush hour......yeah, didn't make it last night. Maybe next time.

This is true Tim, any location will be more convenient for some than others. The Suwanee site works well for me because it's half way there on my way home from work.

But if it's any consolation, I'm commuting 55 miles into Atlanta, then 55 miles back home every day in the Silver One, which of course has no AC (AC is for girls, right?). And I love the drive. Hope to see you at the August meet!

This is why a successful club should have a strong virtual component, so folks like yourself, who can only make a few of the meetings, or Kent in VA or Tim, Dave, Stu, Sam and Michael in the Carolinas, or Romulo down in Warner Robbins, who pop in from time to time, can still enjoy the benefits of membership.

In fact I think it would be really cool if some OGTA chapters opened up in other parts of the country, holding their meetings at the same time as we do. Then we could be part of a virtual group meeting and share the goods online.
