CF FC3s DOORS

been saying it for years! CF doors would sell like hot cakes. it would make the FC so much more competitive in the modern scene. ive seen them on evo's with full working handles, locks, windows, everything. anyone feel me?

supernow CF doors, overpriced @ 1300..

reddozen 02-21-12 10:19 AM

you wont find something like that for much less than that.

Problem with carbon doors is you'll need a roll cage which typically offsets the weight savings. If you have to have a cage anyway, then go for it...

Efinity 02-21-12 10:58 PM

i has cage

reddozen 02-22-12 08:53 AM

I've thought of an idea for people without roll cages, but I'm nowhere near ready to work on my FC. I want the weight savings of the CF doors over the heavy steel, but I want the safety of the reinforced center bar.

Those things are sweet

I would be down for that. Some one would have to send a clean set of fc doors without the ruff paint at the bottom. T2 door preferably. Shipping would be a pain. Unless someone in the LA area is parting out a T2 and buys the doors and brings them to shineauto HQ. Just an idea.

I'd check where the "center" bar is on the rx7. I know that on the tiburon I used to have, the bar was almost at the bottom of the door on a low car. A normal sedan bumper would clear that bar no problem. It might be there for safety... it might be there for show. Unless my thought process is off.?

Anyways, cf doors would be cool, but definitely not easy to make. I'd recommend making flat CF interior panels that I can rivet/bolt on with a door handle cutout of some sort and a conversion to give me some god damn rollers. :icon_tup:

Efinity 03-08-12 03:12 AM

ya the CF is looking a little dismile. probably will just remove the crash bracing.

ajhehr 03-09-12 12:36 PM

i need a set badly... im just not quite crazy/rich enough to bring them across the pond...

the fiberglass doors i got for the 944 and the 240 were 400 combined. and the 944's were actually nice!

gtouch 03-09-12 12:53 PM

I dont think cf door would be worth it for the price. The oem doors you can take out about 94lbs bewtween the two. To beat the weight the doors would have to be dry carbon and then the price is going to be crazy! For example the cwest s2000 dry carbon door were i think $6k a piece but weighted close to nothing. Plus what if you have fitment issues if you cut the oem door fitment is oem still. Just my thoughts on it. I cuty doors out and there are some pics in my build thread

Fiberglass now that may be a different story

Don't even think of running composite doors if you have a street car as it's just about impossible to get every clip and seal to seat correctly. Your windows will flex and whistle. Your car will leak in the rain.

Now if you don't have windows (race car) and don't care about wind noise or trim fitment, then sure.

As to the $1300 = overpriced comment. A $2000 pair of doors that fit would be a better deal than an $800 set that don't/require stupid amounts of work to fit up. That said, very few FC guys spend this kind of money on their cars so it's rare to find a manufacturer for whom it makes good business sense. My only guess is that supernow made them for the race effort then once they had the molds figured why not.

frijolee has good points. It's possible for a racing spec fc only.

$1300 for a pair of CF door (if carbon in and out) is not bad consdering the poor $ to Yen exchange rate.

I don't see anyone offering a pair of CF carbon doors for less than $1000 and making a decent profit for the project.

If you are looking for weight savings for a race car, you can go cheaper and go with an FRP version, which if made correctly, can be as light as a CF version. The only difference is the carbon one is much stronger given the same weight. If you already have a roll cage and you are swapping doors for track events, FRP is all you need. If you feel more comfortable with carbon, you are just gonna have to pay the price. Gutting your oem door is a great option.
