99 spec rear wing

Any chance you have been thinking about making a quality 99 spec rear wing? Not just the center blade but the whole package? It seems like an easy mold but there are not many available on the market. I am sure they would sell fast here.

shineautoproject 11-13-18 03:41 PM

They wing legs (part that attaches to the trunk) are technically not easy to make in composite material because you can't integrate the mounting areas. This item is best made in plastic, which we are looking into.

It would be awesome if you could make the end cover pieces that cover the center section bolts out of carbon. Odula sells them but they only sell plain weave. I'd prefer twill.

shineautoproject 02-05-19 03:59 PM

That could be a possibility.

Mazdapseed carbon insert will be releasing soon.

cr-rex 02-05-19 05:22 PM

What about the end cap peices?

shineautoproject 05-14-19 04:43 PM

I would say the end caps are not possible to properly make in carbon unless it was 3 printed. I'm sure someone could make a half-ass one.

When you say end caps are not possible, are you talking about the piece outlined in yellowor the piece outlined in red?

I think the previous poster was talking about the pieces outlined in yellow.

cr-rex 05-14-19 11:46 PM

yes, the yellow ones. just the caps

shineautoproject 05-15-19 03:37 PM

Referring to the one with the yellow outline.

Just looking at it, you might think it looks like something easy to produce in carbon. The deep hole for the screw will be difficult to get right using a conventional hand-laid technique. Also, you're forgetting how it mounts on the inside. The authentic ones have certain clips that hold it to the wing that pretty much cannot be reproduced in conventional composite. This is why I said someone can make something that "looks" like it, but it is half-ass because it doesn't have the proper mounting unless you feel one screw to hold it in is considered proper.

Anyone getting a composite version of the wing legs and end caps, we can pretty much guarantee you'll be getting a half-ass product compared to the original.

cloud9 05-15-19 04:13 PM

Thanks for the feedback. Can you reproduce the caps in FRP or some other material? Original caps are effectively impossible to find on their own.

shineautoproject 05-15-19 05:44 PM

When we refer to composites, we're referring to FRP or Carbon. Cannot be done with the inner clip. It should be plastic, which is what we're looking in to.

Ah, thank you for the explanation. Please update us when you think you've got something you're satisfied with. I will buy a pair for sure.

The CF ones are made by Odula. Last time I checked RHDjapan, nengun etc sells them.

teebeekay 05-16-19 08:59 AM

The endcaps would have to be injection molded or 3D printed to get those profiles. You could maybe do a molded/printed skeleton to capture the tab profiles then lay the desired composite over that for the finished face. There are rapid prototype companies (ie Protolabs) that can can make molds rather economically.

Comes in plain weave. Doesn't show the inside. Definitely won't have the hook. But if one screw works, great alternative if you are missing end caps.

Why can't you just bond the clips on. Bonding composites is pretty standard, even for high stress situations.

cloud9 05-23-19 12:16 PM

Here are front and back photos of the Odula covers, for those that are interested.

cr-rex 05-23-19 12:58 PM

So it does have the clip. Nice. Is the clip aluminum or composite?

cloud9 05-23-19 01:39 PM

Aluminum.

Fitment of the cover is fine but not perfect. The cover sits deeper inside the cavity than it should so it doesn't sit as flush as I would like. Really wish Ken had an option for us..

cr-rex 05-30-19 03:07 PM

could you put a small thin washer inbetween to space it out?

cloud9 05-30-19 03:11 PM

I had a similar thought and will experiment with that after I get them back from paint.

cloud9 06-13-19 01:50 AM

After experimenting with a couple of ideas, this unsophisticated bit of mangineering got the best result. This is as good as I could get them to fit.
