Last couple years has been November. I know they "try" to schedule the first Friday just after SEMA, but much depends on track availability and Mazda racecar (and driver) availability. Personally, I love mid November as the weather is perfect for those of us driving over from Arizona.

^^^ November is pretty ideal for anyone driving to SoCal. The SS combined with Mazfest was super fun, but driving there without AC in 100+ degree weather during the summer was miserable.

I drove down from B.C. Canada, and only got rained on a bit at the boarder and in Washington. Other then that it was a most enjoyable 1400 mile drive. 
I would not not mind it a little earlier as there was a chance of snow on a few of the passes I have to take, haha.
