I've used the green pads for cleaning up around the irons where the coolant seals go, I'm sure the bristle discs would be ok for that too, just don't go too crazy with it.

you can also pull the front bumper to get a bit of extra room, I typically don't use an engine hoist when pulling a 12a. Just strip it down to the bare block and get a buddy to help lift it out.
