RALEIGH, NC to DEALS GAP CARAVAN - 4/08, 9:30 AM
 

I think we need a drive-in this weekend to firm up plans for the trip out to Deals Gap. Unfortunately I'm in Clarksville, Tn this weekend but get to scout out the route thru Asheville and where we leave I-40 to go southwest to Robbinsville. It was about 271 miles to the 23/74 exit for Waynesville and Clyde, NC and then it looks like about an 80 mile drive to Robbinsville. That's 4.5 hours to Asheville and another 1.5 hours or so to Robbinsville. A solid 6 hours, plus a lunch stop and one gas stop. It looks like Hickory will be a good spot if everyone starts with a full gas tank from Raleigh. I'll bring NC DOT maps for everyone and we still need a list of cell phone numbers.

The first Rest Area west of Durham is just past Burlington, like TO said. Anyone that doesn't need to back track to Raleigh and wants to caravan with us can meet us there. Just let me know that you'll be at the rest area. We'll roll in there about 30 minutes after leaving Raleigh. We need to leave Raleigh no later than 9:30 AM, sooner would be better. To make it to Robbinsville for the dinner at 6:00PM. We will leave as soon as everyone that is leaving from Raleigh arrives at Briar's Creek Caribou Coffee or 9:30 whichever is sooner.

The GRR shirts will be ready and remember to bring $3.00 to pay the remaining balance on S, M, L shirts and $5 for shirts ordered for XL or XXL.

I'll bring the best of the "You know your a Rotorhead . . . " jokes and Greg will bring a guitar to serenade us. I'm sure there are a lot of other things that need to be discussed and decided on so go to the Raleigh to Deals Gap Caravan thread and ask away.

Can some one give me an address so I can mapquest this? I would like to meet you guys at either the rest stop or wherever else you are meeting. I am coming from Martinsville, VA.

Need to know how you'd planned on coming south and where is the best place to hit I-40. It looks like you could make the Rest Stop just west of Burlington, NC or arrange to meet us further west around Greensboro. Johny, zooooom, is coming down from the Danville area, you might want to PM him and see if y'all can meet up and drive down together. We should be at the rest area west of Burlington around 10:30 AM at the latest. PM me or Turbo II with a cell phone number and we can find you if you come down alone to Greensboro. If you want to join us in Greensboro or somewhere along I-40 then when you get on I-40 and get off at a good exit and call us with the exit number and we'll drive by and pick you up.

Thanks Josh and Greg. Josh, I was figuring on a 240 mile drive before having to fuel up but if turbos will need to stop sooner then we just need to know a little a head of time. What is y'alls average driving distance between fill ups? What is the average distance between repairs, while we're at it? Do you know yet if your car is going to be ready for the trip? Hope to see it Friday, that in itself will make the trip worth making.

Greg, thanks for starting to get a list of who and where everyone will be. If you could keep that up to date and insure we don't forget anyone that'll be much apprecitated. Everyone needs to know that we will leave Raleigh, from Briar's Creek, no later than 0930 hrs. If you can't make it there by 0930 then call and let us know and we'll look for you to catch up with us on I-85 or I-40, or at the rest area on 85.

Anyone heard definite commitments from Taylor, Rick, Christina, or others that may join our little adventure? If ya'll have a meet today let me know how we're doing. Still need cell phone numbers for the rest of the group, PM me or post'em here. Thanks Josh, it is programmed in my phone already.

Everyone sign up and take a couple days off work. Get your cars ready, good brakes, good belts, oil changed, tires in good shape. windshield wipers working and rain-x the windshield, and join us for a great time in the mountains. From Steve's report there is still room in the Inn for anyone that wants to make the trip. Are we going to have any first gens in the rotary parade?

I was under the understanding that the meeting place was at Briar Creek and that is only about two minutes down the road from where i live, so i would meet ya'll there. I told him that we'd call when we hit the bypass around the west side of Winston and find out where he decided to wait or meet us.

Good luck on the 7 can't wait to see how it performs on the TOTD in hover mode. Is yours powered by a fusion generator that uses garbage for fuel? This is gonna be fun. just 6 days 'til we leave. Did y'all find someone to share the extra bedroom?

I just got a PM from Phil, the guy that is putting the Deals Gap event together, and he is in need of a few group leaders for the TOTD runs and some extra two way radios for communications. I told him I'd ask y'all about the radios and suggested that we have several good drivers that could help out as leaders if they could get a trip out an back on TOTD in the morning and have an experienced drivers lead them and talk to them about the rules and the dangers. Anyone interested in helping out with the radios and taking on a lead role for one of the groups?

I think banner for our group is a great idea. I think the the logo for the GRR would work for the banner. Just changing the information to Raleigh Rotary Drive-In with the state outline and the rotary logo just like the signs would work.

Bert I have some 2 way radio just cheap models the work about 1/2 mile radius, I was going to bring them anyway, so we'll have them for the caravan. Please don't let Steve-o lead a group I can see them all now trying to keep up.

made some more progress on her today fixed oil leak ran fan wiring I hope to drive her tomorrow although its still ideling kinda rough. I still may take the 4runner Ill keep yall posted.

Josh, I really don't to go in a non rotary either, please; if I got to take the 4runner, you car ride with me, we'll talk about how sweet our cars wii be one day.

I was still hoping to have the 7 ready, but there are so many small things, like; mainly the interior, and electronics(ie boost controller, datalogit, wideband 02, turbo timer, etc) that would have to go on before Friday that I don't think the FD will make it.

i live out in the middle of nowhere, and in the wrong direction. i will probably just leave my fiero parked at the meeting spot. it isn't worth stealing, so i am not worried. :D I'm glad you offered, i will split the gas with you. it's like you said, at least we can go see other rotaries, maybe take a video camera and i can video tape. i am excited, would be more excited if the FD was going, but hey you can't beat a ride in a 4runner.

I logged 60 miles on Tiffany no problems no leaks. The more she ran the smoother it ran. We maybe riding in her I won't decide until thursday. I need to hook up the SAFC to lean out the idle. * Look at me go, two installs and now I sound like a professional tuner* I can't be this good at drifting and tuning. (somebody stop me) Ok enough about me, lets talk about my cars.

Will someone give me directions to the meeting spot, from Capitol blvd. or if there is a better route let me know, If I take the 4runner some one else can go if they want.

Johny and Josh great to hear y'all might be taking a 7 to TOTD, I was gonna tell you that my engine ran rough for awhile after the rebuild and got better and better up til about the 7,000 mile point. I just think it needs some break in time and you should keep changing the oil for the first 3K miles. I think rotor sports recommended changing it at 500 and 1,000 miles and then again at 3.000 miles. We all miss tiffany and can't wait to see her again but you know what it best.

If y'all are gonna meet us at Briars Creek then that is west of Raleigh on Hwy 70. If it was me I think I would go to Roxboro, down 501 to Durham and hit I-85 going east and quickly exit to the right on Hwy 70 to Raleigh. Stay on 70 and Briars Creek shopping center will be on your right. Take a right at the traffic light, go to the second entrance to Briars Creek and find the Caribou Coffeee shop.

If you go over to US 1 and come down Capital Blvd then when you get to Wake Forest exit right on Hwy 98 at the Market of WF shopping center. Stay on 98 going west until you get to Hwy 50, Creedmore Road. You'll cross over Creedmore and exit to the right to Creedmore Road going south. Stay on Creedmore until you intersect with Hwy 70 at the Crabtree Valley Mall intersection. Make a right at the traffic light and now your headed west toward Durham. Stay on Hwy 70 until you go under the I-540 overpass and you will see Briars Creek on your left. Take a left at the traffic light go to the second shopping center entrance and look for Caribou Coffee.

When ever you get close to Wake Forest or hit Hwy 70, if you come thru Durham give me a call. I can meet you on Hwy 98 or Hwy 70. It looks like we'll pick up rotorsownyou7 somewhere around W-S.

Bert I will take the 501 to 70 route I will be calling you that morning when I get close.

if not, you might think about capital, to 540, and take the glenwood/hwy 70. that would be the way i go, but i don't know 501 and those other roads.

Just kiddin', but we'll be leaving at 0930 from Briar's Creek, The Caribou Coffee Shop. I hope everyone has their cars ready to go. I hope Johny and Josh can bring pictures of their cars. Y'all are getting more like our buddy Ashraf all the time. Can't drive your cars but you can show pictures. Maybe in a few months you all will be driving MX-5s.

I'll be changing my oil and cleaning her up for tomorrow morning. Johny can you haul some cleaning supplies up to Fontana? With it raining all day tomorrow here I'm sure we'll have a lot of rain and some might want to wash their cars. I'll bring the supplies if you can haul'em.

Damn johny, that thing is nice. Those rims look very similar to mine; I approve hahaha. I think all it needs now is a spoiler from an 88 TII. Normally I'm not much for S4 lights but they look good on that car.

Tiffany looks great after her plastic surgery. After seeing that Josh will never bring out his FD, he's gonna have to start all over now on his mods. Those pics give us all something to look forward to at the next Drive-In. WOW!

Oh, no shirts tomorrow, the guy never got around to doing them. He has only had a month! I guess telling him I had to have them by Thursday afternoon just wasn't clear enough. It was great! I've posted a few photos already in the April Drive-In section. Have over 100 photos from Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Jason, I and Diane went out and drove the dragon on Sunday morning, Diane actually drove it Sunday morning, she spit in the dragon's eye and kicked it in the butt! And that was the first time she has driven my car! She was awesome. Jimmy and Tom, you're lucky she didn't drive on Saturday.

Things like this are what a car club is all about, thanks for everyone supporting the event, and those that couldn't make it you need to plan on going out next year.

I hope everyone that left on Sunday got back home ok, no tickets and no breakdowns.
