Dang Tim I'm glad you mentioned that. I'd have to take the finish down to bare metal to fix that mistake.

In fact I did some checking and all the urethane's sold in the U.S. turn out to be manufactured in China and imported by Trump Enterprises. Along with most of the stuff on Amazon.

He just puts different brand names on the paint cans and sells them over a wide range of prices to create the illusion that spending more money gets you better auto paint.

Clever, that guy.

So with no options on urethanes I decided to reexamine lacquers.

Lacquers turn out to be nothing more than tree resins dissolved in alcohol and tinted with natural pigments.

Invented by the Chinese of course.

And contrary to James' speculations, lacquers hold up pretty well.

Here's a lacquer finished Chinese coffin from the State of Chu, 4th Century B.C.:

I've got lots of pine trees scattered around my property, so I figure I can collect a bunch of pine pitch, dissolve it in lab alcohol, stir in some Jacquard JAC-JPX1663 Silver Pearl Ex powdered pigments (made in the U.S.A)

And I'll have the finest car paint money can't buy.

Problem with "new" lacquers are they are not made to the same standards (or of the same materials) as lacquers from 30 years ago. So the FB lacquer will outlast your brand new lacquer.

But hey its your car. Just my $.02.

Your 12A is a good one. I broke it apart today and one of the housings is bang up almost perfect. the other housing has some chrome flaking And something I don't see in my FC engines. A chunk of chrome was broken off???!!!???

The irons are ok, take off the rust and you should be fine. The rotors seem ok, but I didn't remove any of the carbon affixed seals (figured you might want to keep the side seals where they came from.

E-shaft is in great shape.

I was joking about the pine pitch James, the only thing a finish like that would be good for is adding feathers.

Thanks for the update on the 12A, sounds like rebuild material for sure. I have a second old school 12A in similar condition, one very good rotor housing, the second with chrome issues, so between the two of them there ought to be a good engine.

This stuff is all going to Robert, the Builder of the TW12A, for the all original SA his kids bought for him a couple years ago. He wants to build a Thermo Reactor capable old school 12A to keep the car all original.

Anyway, I'm serious about finding a good source for decent but affordable generic urethane-based automotive paint. Has anyone got some suggestions for vendors that have good choices in silver finishes, ideally Sunbeam Silver (K3 paint code)?

$89 for a gallon of base is about the cheapest you're gonna find. Local or on interwebs.

But you might have luck at small paint stores. Larger paint suppliers often charge more per/gallon.

I got my clear on earlier tonight....

And I did this one just for you Ray.

"yea but trump paint won’t collude either.!!"

Not so fast Paul, the jury is still out on that one.

Mueller found dozens of cases where Trump people were colluding with the Ruskies.

And then he handed his report over to Congress.

As Trump would say, we'll see what happens.

The Ghia is looking sweet James. I'm not so sure about the Porch tag however.

Kind of tacky, don't you think?

Thanks for the tips on the paint, I'm going to get some and learn how to do it.

That thing? Its just an emblem pulled off a 944 in a junkyard. Dunno what I'm gonna do with it; just thought it needed some clear.

I wanna see a GLASS smooth hood on your LE in a couple of weeks!!! I'm actually gonna fix some of the rock chips on my 7 this weekend. My valence got pretty banged up when it snowed down here last year. Nothing a little code R5 sunrise red paint can't fix

The ghia is doing just swell. Headliner was beyond a bear to get in, but we are almost there. But the upholstery is going really well.

there was no jury.. just a kangaroo court. The real jury will judge all of this in due time.. The Grand Jury. FISA court abuse.. Steele Dosier.. pay to play, Soon the biggest scandal in the history of DC will be fully revealed. The soft Coup of a sitting US president. I’m sure you’re on the Impeachment Team. Be my guest.. it’s a loser. Trump is guaranteed a second term. I know it hurts but I like John Mellencamp.. “hurts so good”!!!

The Ghia looks a lot Bluer out in the sun James, beautiful paint job!

What's with the Rumble Seat? Are you planning on having kids?

By the way, on your recommendation Cathy is going to pick up one of those 1.5 ton HF aluminum jacks for me today.

Good for little jobs around the house.

The LE is entering Phase IV project development so it's off road for the time being.

This is where I put it up on blocks and install:
1) Eibach springs
2) Tokico Blues
3) Slotted rotors
4) Hawk HPS pads
5) Stainless steel brake lines

Along the way the hood will get painted but it depends on the weather and bugs.

Right now too much humidity, too much wind and too many bugs.

I'll be waiting for a nice hot dry windless summer day to get it just right.

Did you guys know that Obama has twice as many Twitter followers as Trump?

(Obama, 106 million followers; Trump 60 million followers)

This despite Trump having twice as many tweets as Obama.

(Trump 41,600 tweets; Obama 15,600 tweets)

Do you suppose folks are getting tired of The Donald's potty mouth?

Coors probably cannot tell you all the ingredients in their beer but I'm sure there's rice and corn syrup involved. My beer is all fresh ingredients. Malt, barley, yeast, water and whatnot. The whatnot might be chocolate, coffee, ginger, orange peel.

Your Home Brew is an incredible experience for sure Tim. It's always a challenge to pick a favorite among your current offerings.

My favorite part is the sediment at the end, you can strain it through your teeth and chew the whatnot for hours.

What you got going this year, Biden's Best Bohemian?

The "back seat"? Its stock. Not much of a seat if you ask me. No room for head or feet.

On blocks???? You're not coming up to the mountains with all us next week?

All you guys and gals have a good time at DGRR this year. Cindy and myself will not be coming to DGRR. Concentrating our funds on our Outer Banks wedding in August. From the looks of DGRR site there is a real good turnout. I was looking forward to finally meeting face to face with Ray. Ray you’ll find plenty other Never Trumpers to laugh with there I’m sure. My Award Winning FB will not be there to just to make it all fair. Sorry to hear Rays LE won’t make it. Just doesn’t seem right!! I have a shelf full of parts to install on mine so I feel ya! Till next time here’s my view of the garage lately... I like it..!!

Just installed a Lip Spoiler on this one yesterday.

Be safe on your way to DGRR ya’all and get to the other end of The Dragon safely!! See ya next time!

Dang, Paul is the only reasonable Trumper I know.

All the others make me nervous.

Especially the ones with guns.

I guess I'll sit DGRR out this year, see what happens in the election.

Hopefully Trump will be in jail by then.

See you guys at DGRR 2020!!

OK, here's the picture of the 2019 DGRR.

It was mostly SA's and FB's this year. I'm not sure why.

It might have been the FC's, FD's and FE's were have mechanical problems.

Damn, I thought you weren't coming?

I decided to sleep in yesterday. Then we drove around 441 on Saturday. Too rainy, the Thursday drive was fun, but I lost the group.

Thanks Fred. It's easy to tell a good story when you've got good material.

And damn, those FBs and SAs sure are pretty.

A picture says a thousand words. Some of them say a billion.
