Might be in Central FL soon... Things to know?

I'm entertaining a job offer in the space coast area and was wondering what some of the locals had to say, both about that area and FL in general? I've been looking into registration of my out of state s2k and RX and it seems a bit odd (VIN check?) and expensive? Also, is there really no safety or smog? It would be really nice if my RX did not get too many odd looks and I did not have to explain my car every year to keep it on the road. Any info would be greatly appreciated and if I end up down there the first round is on me.

Registration is expensive and there are no smog laws. Thank God because my fd would fail the rest

Yeah, with regards to registration, you're looking at 400-450. That's what my 3rd gen cost me coming from Los Angeles. They literally walk out to get your odometer reading, walk back in, take your money and that's it! Just pay them yearly or every other year. If you've got a truck over 600Lbs, you're exempt.

If you're living on the coast, just consider hurricanes. One came through here last year and devastated everything.

What part of the Space Coast?

the only reason registration is so expensive is because there is a $225 fee for every new license plate tag you purchase for a car. once you have that tag you can transfer it to another vehicle when you sell your old one.

when my insight got wrecked i swapped tags from the wrecked car, it only cost me about $100 to register the new car where before it was about $400. so yes, initial registration is expensive and then it is very cheap, and the initial high fee is just temporary, mostly for newcomers.

Thanks for the replies, all. If I accept the offer I'll be work on Canaveral. Any areas I should particularly avoid or is it all fairly decent down there? I do enjoy wooded areas but my primary concern is having a garage.

I have been in Orlando since 1980. If you move to Orlando I can definitely tell you. Where do you want to be? Orlando is anywhere from 1hr to 30 min away

RotaryEvolution 02-26-17 07:42 PM

i doubt he wants to be in orlando and commute to the space coast.

Wedge field off the beeline is only 30 min away

How about Indialantic, Indian Harbor Beach, Satellite Beach, Viera

RotaryEvolution 02-26-17 09:06 PM

most everywhere is going to have good and bad spots, you'll have to poke around wherever you are thinking of going. personally i'd rather be nearer the beach if that is where you are going to be working.

spintriangles 02-26-17 09:35 PM

The beach is great. I would stay away from Cocoa Beach and understand that because of hurricane home insurance is more expensive

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. Unfortunately, it appears the company wants a mid level person for a fresh out of college price and wouldn't budge. I was quite looking forward to FL too. If any of you all are in the Newport News or DC area let me know if you'd like that round.

I work at Cape Canaveral and live in Indialantic (20 miles south of Cocoa Beach). Indialantic is a nice place but the drive is too long because you only have 1 route basically down A1A. I drive 30 miles one way. If you are on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) expect to drive 6-10 miles to the nearest building you work at. Cities closer to CCAFS are Titusville (not much there), Merritt Island & Cocoa Beach. I recommend you take a few days to cruise the areas. You definitely want a garage!
