UK built FD gets into the 10's (Video Link)

Congrats to RE:Worx in the UK, who recently grabbed the record for the fastest UK built FD. Good work guys and still lots to come.

The vid was made by some Honda guys :( Anyway, the FD is running a T51 kai setup with a mild street port and was dyno'd at 506rwhp. Thats all the info I have.

Gotta love the eye of the tiger.....

thats funny how the reaction time was like 3 seconds, did he just let the other guy get out earlier...give him a head start

Congratulations to the RE-worx crew.

A lot of times when you are just going for the best ET out of the car and don't care about anything else, you just leave when you and the car are ready, not when the light goes green :). Did look as though the driving was a bit "soft" as far as shifting and such and the launch looked so-so- but damn impressive run none the less. With some driving, the car will only get quicker from here!!

I should also say that for being the first in the 10's in the UK with an FD, they sure did it with athority :). when you mentioned first in the 10's, I was expecting a 10.99 or something. that is impressive for a first!!

There are a few UK FD's being built at the moment that are capable of competing with this car on the strip so they needed to knock something special out. Don't think that record will stand for long.

Anyway, it's good to see the UK FD's start to close the gap on US and Jap builds ;)

Things have moved on a bit now :)

On the 12th June, the car ran a 9.83@143mph.

Thats pretty dam fast

Does anyone know if a car like this, with a launch like this, can put all that shock and torque through the stock tranny?

I'm itchin real bad to take my car to the strip and side step the clutch, but I just don't know if my brand new (can't afford to break) stock tranny can take it. I've got right around 500 to the wheels, an extreme pressure plate with 6 puck, Kaaz diff, axels, and 9.5s on 18s. At what point do the stock transmissions tend to break from the combination of the shock of hard launching/shifting and higher torque imputs???

turboR1 07-22-05 08:02 AM

did u say 18's as in 18inch rims... dont worry about breaking your tranny because you prob will never have traction to even come close to breaking anything.. FD trannys are pretty strong and can take alot of abuse since our cars dont make much torque anyway... 500 shoudlnt be a problem..

Old Slow Coach 07-22-05 02:40 PM

Thanks for the repy! Yes, 18" wheels... I'd like to know at what point people decide it's a good idea to upgrade the transmission. Maybe they only do it for reduced shift times and never for increased hp/tq capacity. With my LSD and relatively tall, wide, sticky tires, you might under estimate the amount of torque it takes to break them free. My ride hooks up pretty good. Throw in the shock factor of side-stepping a 6-puck clutch with an extreme pressure plate with 370 ft/lbs behind it and I think I've got to be approaching the limits of the stock capacity. Maybe I'm not, but looking for more definitive assurances. I tried searching the archives, but didn't have any luck. Do you have any more specific information about this? Again, thanks for your reply!

I just sent an e-mail to the guys who built the car that is the subject of this thread. When/if I hear back, I'll let you know anything I can learn about this car.

After looking at this video again, I realized that he didn't actually do what I would call a "hard launch" or a "side-step". It looks like he gets it rolling along before the clutch is fully engaged. Not too much shock involved with this type of launch, I believe.

Here's their response...

Hi Spencer

Thanks for the congrats, its a pretty major achievement on this side of
the
pond!

No the box isnt stock, its a Trust dog box which is shifted with very
little/no clutch work. We ran stock boxes last year but they were
getting
noisey and hard to shift after a couple of hard runs.

Cheers,
Rich

To clarify, its a stock FD case with Quaife-built dog-engaged gear set, with a standard H-pattern shift.

The car made 550-ish at the wheels on our Dyno Dynamics just before it ran 9.83. The port is a large street port essentially. It has made a bit more power previously. It runs a 13B-RE motor with stock -RE plenum and intake manifold. The 9.83 was run with a new driver on his first run :)

More to come, a few things planned...

Thanks for the interest Spencer.

Regards,
Rich
