Tuning stories

I have been using Rtek for a while and it works well. Great for people who want to learn tuning without going to a full stand alone.

I started rich to be safe and was suprized on how well the car ran. Seems rotaries will run ~10.3 or so. I had to fix a lot of stuff on the old car to get enough fuel. I have made a lot of logs and have a big data set to study. After I changed my original downpipe and midpipe with a one piece thunderpipe I noticed that my "dyno runs up a hill" were ~0.5 ratio richer than before. Nothing else was changed. I found that my original setup was leaking air and making the WB read leaner that it really was. Note the graph of AFR with both pipes. I learned not to just trust wbo readings blindly. Glad It was an error in the safe direction.

I leaned the region between 6-10 psi and 2000-6500. I was shooting for max flame speed that happens around 11.1

After several back to back runs up the hill I can overlay the two logs. The dotted line is the leaner setup and it is easy to see that with the leaner mixture I get to 6730 rpm in 11.88 sec whereas the richer set up only gets to 6650 rpm in the same time. (this was not pl viewer). I have a track event next week so I will be able to tell more then, This is just the average improvment and I really want to know where in the power band the improvment is.

By doing a bunch of calculations, I an turn RPM into ft/sec and then by math convert that to accelaration. Knowing the weight of the car and acceleration I can estimate torque. This map gives me more torgue between 2500-5000 just where I want it. To really do this right I need an accelerometer. But for now the estimates seems to work OK.

In summary the Rtek seems to be a great tool to tune with and learn basic tuning. If you get it wrong you can easily go back to stock.

One other thing is that Palm pilots are so cheao these days I have collected a few from garage sales. They arn't so sturdy and I have broke a screen dropping
one. Be sure to hot sync your maps and no problem. They are great for keeping notes on tuning experiments too.

how to upload jpg

I noticed that my graphs didn't make it. Is there any tricks to getting graphics in posts? I used the upload feature and it looked like it got through?
