I just got it and am trying to sync it to my laptop. I followed a link and I'm confused as to what I type in for the location of the files. The pdf doesn't give you this information. Please help.

This does not work with usb (at least I never got it to work) but works very well using a Com port (or USB Com port adapter) and no need for the palm desktop.

So, after get this, it'll hot sync to the laptop? I have windows7 on my laptop and it'll work then? Sorry, I'm a newb.

From what I saw on the cable, it only has 9 prongs. Where can I get one for my brand of laptop? My acer laptop has 15 prong holes. Staggered 5 on top, middle and bottom.

That isn't a serial port thats a VGA port for a monitor. Laptops (or desktops) rarely come with serial ports anymore. But you can get a USB to serial adapter for under $10.

Ok, I'll have to check the local microcenter for the right one. Those won't work with my laptop.

Why not? it should work with any windows computer with a USB port.

I was referring to the number of prongs on the plug. Mine doesn't have a 9 hole port.

The adapter is meant to plug into your laptop's USB port and the other end of the adapter connects to the 9 pin connector on your hotsync cable. It basically adds the DB9 serial connector to your laptop. The 15 pin connector on your laptop is a VGA connector and has no use here as it's meant to connect a monitor to your laptop.

That's odd. The hot sync cable I have is a usb.

Some random tidbits that will hopefully make it clearer:

You can't use a USB cable to connect to the Rtek, so I assumed you had a serial hotsync cable.

If you want to use the "simple" pilot_install program I previously linked, you need to use a serial connection, not the USB, so you would need to use the same serial hotsync cable you need to connect to the Rtek. This would also require the adapter I linked to as you computer does not have the required serial com port to connect the serial hotsync cable. The adapter converts a USB port on your computer to a DB9 serial port.

If you want to use the USB to connect your Palm to the PC , you can attempt to find the drivers for the full Palm Desktop software. Then you don't need the adapter. But you will still need a serial (DB9) hotsync cable to connect to the Rtek.


Serial connect to PC for hotsyncing with PilotInstall program
PC USB port -> USB to serial adapter -> Serial hotsync cable -> Palm

Rtek connection
Rtek -> Serial hotsync cable -> Palm

If you can get the right Palm Desktop drivers:
PC USB port -> USB Hotsync cable -> Palm

Come to think of it, I have one of those adapters from the emanage I have. It's a serial cable, so I should be good.
