Finally! Tuning your Rtek Ecu with a laptop(or desktop)
Thanks to solareon for the conforimation that you can get it to work.
He used the palm os emulator described here:
https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...7&postcount=60
and some sort of rj-45(ethernet) to rs232(db-9, serial) adapter for cisco modem's
i picked up a serial female to famale, and that's were i failed.. until today...
I was able to first use P OS Emu, and load up the palm02 4.0 which was limited to 160x160 rez and black and white.
Then i loaded up palm os SIMULATOR, and palm os 5.4(cobalt). for 320x480 rez, and rich color. which was kinda the point.
HOW?? It's called a 6 foot female to female, NULL MODEM SERIAL Cable
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SERIAL-Null-...item45f3cfc12e
and it works great.
they also make usb to null serial cable/adapter i might try out with my newer vista laptop.
http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-SERIAL-NULL-...item20ae7c845d
Next up, remote tunning via desktop. stay "tuned".

you use the program pretty much like a PDA by using the mouse pointer as your stylus, but yes you can run every part of the rtek software, logs, setup, tuning adjustments. you can use the keys as the up and down hard buttons i'm pretty sure, but i didnt think to try it, now its raining...
i have yet to figure out how arghx and solareon and even turb2ltr get to show the full maps from the rtek software, i know arghx's haltec supports it fairly easily. not a fan of the numbering system.. like know 22000 is 0 psi threash hold, i'd rather it just say 0 psi/hg, you know?
wanna tell me how you post your maps guys? in full view i mean, so i could share mine( which is mostly just arghx's.
There from my 9.4 rotors, with 87 octane and 5-8 psi

I always thought it was interesting that everyone always assumes/mandates 93 (I understand it offers greater knock protection better detergents and all that jazz).
On larger turbo's, more agressive tunes, or building maps from scratch I get this, but for the stock turbo and a piggy back, it seems that 87 could be run safely; I've seen puerto ricans run 87 octane with the stocker @ 10-12 psi all day w/ just an FPR, MSD, and MBC. Then again "Puerto Ricans can carve apex seals out of coconuts and run 10's...all motor" so.....

i used to run 87 with 8.5 rotors on 13 psi, on the stock turbo and intercooler with only 720cc and fuel pump upgrades. but it sucked to much gas, this was years ago before the rtek was out.
i think 87 has it's power limits, and then 93 you can advance the timing abit farther to get a little more horsepower out of it, and then going on to c16 to get even more, by being able to advance your timing even more. for me, this is my daily and i can get 87 oct for 2.38-.250 a gallon... and still get 22mpg average.
before the rtek and timing curve changes i had to run 93, as i cracked 4/6 apex seals when i put 87 oct and told my self" i just won't boost until i get some more 93 back in it." the same day i put 87, i got had a few beers and got froggy :\.

I will post a link to the Palm Simulator Cobalt software for anyone to use. Click to Download It can be hard to find it... I just need to get that cable to get it going. I knew it would work eventually. Now we just need to get some programmers to get cracking on that AFM delete ... Just joking Digital Tuning... We still love you guys!

I had done this when the rtek2.0 came out and i used the serial null adapter. My problem with the emulator was that it did not save settings or maps loaded into the palm emulator. I had good connectivity and i was able to view all parameters but when it came crunch time to tuning, it was a bust. So i gave up. I am glad someone got it to work, even if it took nearly 2 years since my last attempt.
To bad, i think my PC emulator thread got deleted while back, i had some good info in there.

The Power FC software (FC-Datalogit) displays it in those pressure units which are basically kilograms per cm^2, kind of like what you see in some oldschool boost gauges. There's no way to change it. Thank our friends at Apex'i which used Japanese engineering terminology in the software. For example, the pressure coordinates are called "PIM" or Pressure Intake Manifold. The throttle position sensor voltage is called VTA (voltage throttle angle).
For a persopn who wants to get an Rtek 2.1 and not even purchase a Palm at all, can someone give a consolidated list of what exactly one needs to make this work (with color display) on a modern laptop? What programs and what cables? Is it just a USB serial converter, palm os 5.4, and the Rtek software?

Somebody somewhere made a spreadsheet in a word document. I modified that and posted screenshots.

THe null modem part means that instead of trying to let the laptop do the talking to the rtek, the rtek has the control to start and do all the talking whilse the laptop just listens.
the why? simply swapping reciever for transfer wires, and "dtc" and DTE' which are connection opening wires.
The palm emu software support save states, that can be save as a file and it's held all my settings/logs/ and such from being turned off. oh theres another though, no more dead batterys and losing maps!

that image is for DB25s.
The Rtek only uses pins 2,3, and 5 on the DB9 so to make a null modem, you just have to swap pins 2 and 3. Radio shack has db9 null modem adapters.
Also keep in mind you cannot save maps or datalogs when running on the laptop. So I don't think anyone would want to use this as the only way to access the Rtek.

I'm going to double check the saving maps/datalogging and maybe make a video of how to do it, b/c the software supports emulated hotsync's and i know I was able to VIEW a saved datalog
i played around with it for about 30 mins, but when i get home, i'll make sure i can save maps, and save datalogs, and even xfer them back to the original palm (handspring visor). just for the guy that wants an rtek, but not a palm.

The cable I used is called a cisco rollover cable. Pinout is like this

well after two hours of screwing with it, i say stick with p os Emulator, and palm 4.0, it's color, but low pixel, but it serves it's purpose as a palm replacement...
However.. while trying to save and load maps with 5.4 it hung.. and my timing maps when wacko and it reverted back to load vs. rpm timing. it took about 1 hour 15 mins to get it back to it's using POSE. my palm actually froze and i couldn't get it to work right, and i still can't but pose did it all for me.

i've noticed were using the palm, or the palm os emulator(palm4) when i load maps it ALWAYS changes it back to load vs rpm, although it does load my correct map. i also get an occational "unexpected table size" which may have something to do with it.
it seems like months and months ago i read someone had that same problem, and it's a known issue, that is on the "to be fixed" list.. thoughtS?

So I got the emulator to run palm OS on a win XP PC, and now I was confused about which cable(s) I need to get. Do I need to get one or two items?
Rtek ECU --> ??? ---> PC
or
Rtek ECU --> ??? --> ??? --> PC
Thanks
