Feedback on web based map editor

I know it's not 100% ideal , but a stepping stone to something better.

Take a look at this:
http://pocketlogger.com/viewer/mapvi...name=maps2.pdb

Its the beginnings of a browser based map editor. Right now it's read only.

It's not pretty, just a proof of concept to write the code that can read in the map PDB file.

Though due to technical reasons, I'm not sure it will be as user friendly to edit as I'd like it to be.

I'm open to any and all feedback about what you think the user experience should be like. Please limit your responses to this project. For now I would love to get feedback from people that have used other PC based editors...or anyone with ideas on how it should work to make sure I'm heading in the right direction.

The idea here is that you'd load up your maps.pdb file, do your editing and hotsync it back to your palm to load it in.

Eventually I'm working towards being able to take the Palm out of the process...

Heres another little proof of concept for actually editing the maps...I think I like this..

http://pocketlogger.com/viewer/mapviewer/jsmap.php

Click on a cell to toggle selection. You can select multiple cells.

Now press the plus key (+) and all highlighted cells will increase by one.

Whatcha think? Headed in the right direction for easy map editing?

I think it looks great. It clearly gives you the information you need to see, the colors add something also. I think its a step in the right direction with all the users that want the PC/Laptop Interface. It looks very easy to use. I'm only concerned about switching maps, but checking the tables on the palm before you drive it would be a must for me. Good Job.

P.s. I've attached a pdb file for your use(if you need it). Maybe I could take a peek...

The + - Idea works great you can highlight multiple cells and + (and hopefully minus) ... Awesome!

Here you go.

nick, are all those maps from the same car? Do they look right to you? To me it looks like some of them aren't reading in correctly.

Umm... I'm not sure there's a lot of them. I've attached a newer one I just saved.(Nick T04 1).

But I think it looks correct. I'll be looking at them closer.

Thanks.

That is awesome. Personally, I feel that you wouldn't need to remove the palm from the process-I don't mind the extra step of downloading. As Nick d alluded to, having the ability to see the whole map makes it worth it. Great job.

Looks great. Keep up the good work

turbo2ltr,

if you've ever used the AEM EMS software you will realize that your "proof of concept" is already ahead of their ugly and cluttered interface:

This is cool, I always wanted to be able to edit the maps on the pc, just makes it so much easier to view the whole map at once. I appreciate your effort and can't wait for this to become available. Thanks!

Can you guys hit up the selection proof of concept and tell me if doesn't work in your browser http://pocketlogger.com/viewer/mapviewer/jsmap.php I've updated the funtionality and made it pretty much as big as the largest timing table.

I've tested FF3, Chrome, and IE6. IE6 is painfully slow selecting and updating. Chrome is the fastest. FF is marginally slower than Chrome. All of them behave as they should though.

Key things to check are that holding the shift key allows you to select multiple cells or areas. And the plus key will increment the values of the selected cells. Just look out for any "weirdness"...it should work like you think it should work.

Thanks.

NJGreenBudd May 6, 2009 10:28 PM

FF3 is plenty fast for me.

Tested in IE7 and it works, slow but it works. Weird thing is I have to use the + key on my side number pad instead of being able to use the +/= key on the regular keyboard.

BFGRX7 May 6, 2009 11:07 PM

Works fine for me and fast.

It may be because I'm "stealing" the shift key. Not sure. I prefer using the + and - on the number pad so I dont think I actually tried the +/= key...

Thanks for the feedback..

I also started playing around with different selection indications... since I fully plan to color the backgrounds based on the cell's value, I don't want to use the cells background to also show selection... So I'm trying this out, but I dont like it:

http://pocketlogger.com/viewer/mapviewer/jsmap1.php

It just is not as obvious to what is selected....especially once the cells are colored backgrounds....still working on it..

BFGRX7 May 7, 2009 01:21 AM

Maybe you can make the background color simply become lighter once selected.

Nick_d_TII Sep 1, 2009 05:17 PM

This would be great are there any updates? Even for just viewing/comparing maps.

Nick_d_TII Sep 10, 2009 03:03 PM

nothing...

turbo2ltr Sep 10, 2009 08:05 PM

Sorry guys, no new updates. Been working on other stuff..

I have attached a RX7L.PDB in a zip file.

Nick_d_TII Sep 14, 2010 04:33 PM

Anything yet?

SoloII///M Sep 27, 2010 08:37 AM

I really want this.

Right now, the only effective way to adjust large portions of the map up and down at once is to save them as different maps and load them in. Thing is - nine times out of ten that just doesn't work. Crashes, hanging, etc...

When I'm at the dyno I don't want to spend my time adjusting each cell up and down one at a time. Too much chance for error, and it takes too long.

SoloII///M Nov 10, 2010 10:07 AM

Bump. What's the status of this?

turbo2ltr Nov 10, 2010 01:20 PM

It's been abandoned in favor of a standard PC program. No release date in sight at this point though.

So it should only be a couple weeks then! Great news!

Jus kiddn...

driftxsequence Nov 10, 2010 02:46 PM

So we will be able to hook a serial cable into a PC and control the ECU that way? that would be great. dyno tune with a laptop, or have a friend hold it. or keep the more portable palm for when you want to keep something light and small in the car at all times (glove box!)

i'll be looking to pick up a stage 2 ecu this winter for my n/a :)
