MSD6A / MSD6AL, 2nd Gen Coils, Spark Plugs

I'm guessing my ignition system is taking a crap. I dynoed 472 and a couple weeks later my plugs were fowled and I replaced them with new ones (NGK 9's all around) and couldn't get over 450hp without changing a thing.

So from my research, the answer is to put in NGK b10egv plugs (keep them gapped where they come in box), buy a MSD6A, and buy a 2nd gen leading coil. This advice was given by Brian (owner of BNR turbos).

My questions for you guys is....

Does the coil have to be from a Turbo II?
How much should I pay for one?
Does it plug right in or what is involved with putting in the 2nd gen coil
Should I buy the MSD6AL to use the 2 step or keep launching off the rev limiter?
Is there anything else I will need?

Thanks in advance for everyones help! The Rotary Drag racing is the only place I can get good advice!

Ask Viking War Hammer he make 603rwhp with this igntion system.

If I remember right, you do have to do some easy wiring for the coil, I'm sure you can find info on this doing a search, that must have been what I did. I paid like $30 - $40 for the used coil at a local junk yard, no problems with it, can't remember if it has to be from a Turbo II, but I don't think so, search will tell you. Read up about the MSD ignition to make sure its a good choice. The Jocobs unit I have is nice, no problems, made nice improvement over stock.

I did a little searching before I posted this and didn't really find exactly what I was looking for. Anyone ever do a write up on it? Lupe said he was going to do a write up on the MSD6AL but then never saw it.

Yeah, I was going to do a write up on the 2step 6al dooly dally but I got all petered out. :naughty:

I used a Tii coil but was later told that the na coil was the same ? Not sure if that's the truth.

Anyhow, I picked up a TII coil for $20 I think........ they aren't worth much so don't overpay.

I actually found the instructions on here on how to wire in the 6AL. I'll look tommorow for it while I'm at work and post it here for you. It was real easy to hook up, same with the TII coil. Very easy.

Next, the 2 step. I hated that......... just because of the 3 relays you need to use and I've got meatload fingers so I had a hard time with them :hahano:

They weren't that bad, I was just in a rush to get it hooked up and it was in the middle of the summer.......... and of course, the banana fingers......

Give me until tommorow, I'll find that write up for you.......... and work on the basic instructions for the 2 step.

I used my 2 step off my stock clutch switch. Don't do that......... you'll be engaging your 2 step between shifts ! I know all about that ! haha

By a coil wire from jegs for $10 and use that...................... I'll post links tommorow. Too tired

tom94RX-7 09-20-07 12:27 AM

You should be able to follow the wiring instructions that come with the msd ignition, I think I just followed the directions from the Jacobs ignition when I hooked it up with the FC coil. And if needed I could look at my wiring and tell you which color wires are hooked up to where, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. The FC coil just has a + and - for 2 wires, and I'm sure the ignition instructions will tell you the 2 output wires and which one is + and -. I wouldn't worry about it.

Now you got me thinking about a MSD 2 step setup. It would have been nice if there was more discussion about this at this recent thread - https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hlight=fc+coil

No Updates as usual... :(

Viking War Hammer 09-22-07 08:32 PM

shit, i forgot again ................ haha

already dudes......... let me uh do some searching and typin

Viking War Hammer 09-22-07 08:35 PM

Edit.............. what the hell, the search function sucks ass. Only two results for 6AL ? Bs........

MSD 6AL / TII Leading Coil Instructions

I ran one MSD 6AL and 1 TII Coil on leading and left the stock 3rd Gen trailing and coil.

I've "Heard" that the TII coils and NA coils are the same but for the price, I would just buy some TII coils. They can be had dirt cheap ($10-$15).

Cut the two wires to your stock leading coil. The Black/Red wire is (+) and the Yellow/Blue wire is (-)

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...d=115235&stc=1

The MSD Black wire connects to the TII Coil side (Negative Terminal).
The MSD White wire connects to the ignitor side Yellow/Blue.
The MSD Orange wire connects to the TII Coil (Positive Terminal).
The MSD Red wire connects to the ignitor side Black/Red.

Ground the big black MSD wire.
Hook the Big Red MSD wire, through a 10 amp fuse, to the battery. It doesn't have to be a switched power source.

2 Step :shocking:

Buy the MSD 2 Step (8739 Model Number)

Buy two normally closed 5 Pin Relays (You can pick them up at your local Autozone or the junkyard :lol2: ) Don't buy the pilot brand, those are normally open relays.

Buy a variety of MSD Pills. I can't suggest to you what works because the 2 step works different on everyones setups. I'll talk about this in a minOOt. :lol2:

The plug wire that's coming out of the two step box, plug that into the side of the MSD 6AL.

Black wire coming out of the 2 Step Box, ground that to the chassis.

Red wire coming out of the 2 Step Box, that go's to whichever switch you'll be using. 12 V to that red wire will active the two step. My went straight to my stock clutch switch (I would recommend you wire this into your horn button). Activating the 2 step everytime you push the clutch in doesn't work to well when you're banging through gears :rlaugh:

Next, you'll want to use one normally closed 5 pin relay for each trailing coil.

Trigger those relays to shut off your trailing coils with the same switch your using to activate the 2 Step.

Coil wires: You can splice into either the positive or negative, either one will cut power to the coils.

I'm bad at wiring relays so I'm not going to even bother explaining how. Just wire them to turn off the trailing coils :lol2:

Now, the pills......... You'll need to use two pills. One is your normal Rev Limiter. I used a 8,200 RPM Pill for my rev limiter in module 2 . Make sure your PFC Rev Limiter Setting is higher than the Rev Limiter Pill you're using. Anyhow, I used a 3,000 RPM PILL in module one and only got 3-5 psi. I wasn't happy until I rattled some teeth, so I tossed in a 8,000 RPM Pill in module one. That did the trick

There you go, hope I didn't leave anything out. Can't wait to hook it up on my new RX7 !!!

Thanks Crispeed for the help.

:)
A nitrous activation switch/bracket from NOS makes for a good clutch switch. Just make sure it only activates when the clutch is all the way to the floor for those that use the two step below their over rev limiters.

Yeah, that was my problem with using the stock clutch. It would engage when you barely touched the clutch pedal :wallbash:

you the man

Jay7 Nyc 09-24-07 12:19 AM

Thank you Viking and Crispeed. I'll be trying this tomorow hopefully...

MichaelB145 09-24-07 01:09 AM

I can't wait to hook this shit up! I won't be doing it in my garage like Lupe did though! LOL

Anyone know if the 6AL can be easily pulled apart to be dipped in Chrome? Also, Crispeed....you have mentioned you like the 6AL over the Digital 6. Why?

Zyrano 09-24-07 01:58 AM

This is actually a common swap for the first gens, so you can get a lot of information there... The 2nd gen coils are all the same from what I have read, and make sure you skip the ignitor attached to the back of the 2nd gen coil, you don't use those with the msd.

Viking War Hammer 09-24-07 01:07 PM

Take some videos of it guys !

I never got around to taking any videos of mine !

Have fun ! :)

13B-RX3 09-24-07 08:05 PM

Eric, did yours blow flames and bang when you put it on the two step. Mine doesn't do that even to 10,000 RPM. It builds boost no problem but it doesn't make people run in fear:shocking: :shocking: :shocking: .

Yeah, mine banged and popped. I probably had 2 foot flames. Nothing like the pro cars you see but enough to light up at night.

10,000 rpms ????????? Damn son ! You're gonna break a rod !!!!!!!!!

Did you see the video of that Godzilla RX2 on the two step ? Now, that was cool............... it drove by the video camera and hit the two step. It sounded like a machine gun ! Nuts ! :shocking: :shocking:

I can't remember exactly what i did but one time my car started banging when i was running it in the shop. My wife comes around the corner and starts screaming at me. Where the exhaust was pointing as the shop door actually dented it!!!

10K is my low setting:rlaugh::rlaugh::rlaugh:.

Yeah, i got that vid in my HD, it's great.

Oh well, i guess i need to not worry about flames and 5th gear burnouts and just enjoy what i have. I cant wait till i get my trans back from liberty's and get it back on the track.

What happened to your trans ? Is that why you haven't ran it lately ?

It kept peeling snap rings off the main shaft. I figured while i had it out i might as well step into the 21st century and get the face tooth mod done. Now i can honestly say i have a dog box. I have to get the trans back in, replace my WG diaphragm, replace my seatbelts (they went out of date before i ever drove it), and sort out a few other performance related issues and she is ready for some real boost!!!

Sorry guys, i just realized this has nothing to do with this thread.:sadwavey:

That's because of the tune and also because you're two stepping at the rpm the big dogs do!

Mines never bang or shot flames either. On methanol it was a different story! :rlaugh:

I ordered my 2nd gen leading coils from Mike@RotaryMike.com He says he has a few of them if anyone else wants them. He sells them for $25 shipped. I went to go pick up a MSD 6AL for $150 brand new which I thought was a good deal, and it ended up being a SCI (Sport Compact Ignition). Was this a good thing or a bad thing that I bought it anyways? I did like the fact it wasn't red!

MichaelB145 09-27-07 11:45 PM

OK.....I got everything....just a couple more questions before tomorrows install.....

-1st is what pill should I get for it? Don't I have to get a 4K pill to launch at 8K?
-"By a coil wire from jegs for $10 and use that" Viking....which ones do I need to buy and why?
-Do use the 2nd gen ignitor or the 3rd gen? What do I have to do?
-Anything else I should know?

MichaelB145 09-29-07 11:56 AM

Bump, anyone have good experience using the SCI?
