MSD 6al-2 Install on leading side only
1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys last time at the track had a hard time launching the FD consistently. So I went ahead and decided to make some changes to the car to improve at the strip. I decided to install a MSD 6AL-2 on my leading side to have some sort of 2 step on the car. In my install I wired a Relay via Trailing coils to shutdown the trailing side. I had a couple of test runs in the garage and no luck. I verified on the MSD that its on 4cyl mode, and played with the 2 step limit. The problem I'm having is if I set the 2 step limit to 4500 it holds for a second then it jumps inconsistently sometimes up to 6700. I was under the impression that when you set the 2 step it holds on that given RPM. Its obviously not holding has anyone have experience on using this 2 step on a leading side only. Any advice or input will be appreciated thanks
PS Below is attached how the msd/2 step is wired up on my car........ |
If im not mistaking you have rev cut both coils leading and traling to get full control on 2step. Im sure someone has done
This before ans will shime in and better answer your question |

Looks like I'm not getting spark on leading side just trailing. That explains why my 2 step is not working. I'm messing with it today to see if I can fix it.

Please inform us on your resolution, I would like to purchase a 2step control module on my FC aswell, knowing yours is FD, I'm certain it will be very similar.

I found my problem but not sure about something. I attach a picture of the problem I'm having. The black/red wire that goes to the leading coil is on the positive side. I spliced into it but I'm not getting 12v. Do I have to join a 12v source to the black/red wire in order to get my 12v to my orange wire. I did it exactly as the picture shows on the coil harness. I'm leaning towards jumping a 12v wire and trying it out.

Red wire is showing 12v when ignition is at the ON position. So that's good but the white wire is showing 12v. Should the white wire be showing 12v on the ON position?

Sammy, are you getting your signal for the MSD after the ignitor or before it from the ecu? An msd can not take a signal processed by the ignitor. I has to come from the ecu to the msd to work. I need to look at the wiring schematic for the ignitor to see which wires need to be interrupted by the relay to shut down the trailing coils.

Here is what I saw in the '94_wiring_diagram.pdf from foxed.ca
1H negative signal into MSD (LG) B/W from ign2 to ignitor and coils runs through relay controlled by clutch switch or momentary switch B/W wire completely cut to leading coil. Y/L cut from ignitor to leading coil. It gets power and signal from MSD Page Z28 in the wiring section of the 94 manual. See you soon. |

Here is a good diagram of the section I am talking about.
