doug nash trannys and inline shifters?
I have seen a few rx7s with these set ups locally. I'm looking to use this set up myself in my drag car. But I can not find any real info on which Doug bash tranny is used in this set up. Anyone here used this set up want to chime in and clue me in?

Send your Doug Nash tranny off to Liberty for face plating, get a vertigate shifter. Just call Paul at Liberty for more info.

Your going to have to start with the basics or me...lol. I'm not really even sure on which Doug Nash tranny to use or what will even work. I found a few 4+1 and 4+3 trannys. I think they are both from c4 corvettes. Are these the one I should be looking at? Or should I be looking for a 5 speed DN tranny? Where to get a bell housing adapter, what bell housings to use, clutch/flywheel combos, ect... Any info here would be great, since I am basically oblivious to DN trannys. didnt even know they were being used until recently. lol... |
The 4+1 is what you want. stay away from the 4+3 and the Richmond Street trans (they look very similar to the 4+1). The 4+1 is actually a 5 speed. Gforce sells the adapter and the input shaft you will need. I would suggest using a TII bellhousing and stock flywheel. All you need for a clutch is a good pressure plate and a sintered iron disc to match the spline of the input shaft.
Here are a couple pics for you. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ighlight=shiny I would also recommend sending it to liberty's to have them do the face plate mod. It shifts MUCH better after this is done! |

It shifts MUCH better after this is done! I been googling my ass off and couldnt find any real info. Just a bunch of hot rodders and old school V8 guys using them. So now i am on the hunt for a 4+1. but, I did however find a 5 speed doug nash locally for a decent deal. Already has an inline shifter on it. (the 5th gear is not an overdrive and has a 1:1 ratio). The guy told me it was on a circuit car originally and was an aftermarket tranny. Not a factory trans originally and it was before Richmond. Would this be just as good as a 4+1? or stick to the 4+1? |
The 4+1 is a five speed with a 1:1 5th gear. As far as i know DN didn't make any race transmissions beside the 4+1. I would be skeptical of the trans locally. A circuit car shouldn't have an inline shifter. Get a pic of it and i can tell for sure. There are still TONS of parts for these transmissions out there you just have to know where to look.

How much are you looking to spend? Will the car ever be driven on the street?
|
I got the guy to send me some pictures of the tranny. I'll be able to post them tomorrow hopefully.
I'm not really sure what I'm looking to spend, I guess it would depend on the quality of the transmission in what it came with. this is for my all motor drag car, it will never see the street. |

Holy shit, did that thing come out of a boat? That is an "H" pattern shifter not an inline, not the best for drag racing. The one thing i need to see if it is the race or street box is not in the pic. Do you have a picture of the drain plug side of the case that is zoomed out a little? Also does it have a place to put a speedometer drive?
Edit: I am about 95% sure that is a street trans and not the pro shifted race trans. See if you can get pics of the other side. |
There is a guy on the net that is selling a doug Nash 4+1 5 speed on the net with the bell housing, he states the tranny is alread set up for turbo/nos applicated drag car, everything on the inside has been refreshened...Check him out
I have a TII bell housing for sale right now if your interested...Its for sale Let me know... |

The inline shifter will have some sort of lever to pull it up to the 1-2 gate. That is definitely a "H" pattern.

when i found it, I was using google and it popped up...
Where or what car do these Doug Nash Tranny's come out of? |
I'm looking to work a deal for that one right now. But I still have my eye on the local trans because its much less expensive.
13bRx3 - The local DN trans did not come with a speed drive. He also told me it does have an H pattern shifter on it, but he has the inline shifter for it. He is getting me the other picture hopefully by tonight. |
Seriously, if I was anywhere near that DN in Hollywood I would jump on it. How much will the adapter plate and Mazda input shaft alone cost? Seems like a good deal, and they already come pro-shifted so you could always wait to get it face-plated in the future. That other one doesn't look like it's been stored too well either...
|
Somebody anybody? Where or what car are these transmission found? what car?
|
They didn't come factory in any car. They are an aftermarket racing trans that is no longer made.
