Best Bang for the Buck Clutch for FD?

I have been running a RPS Max series clutch now for 3 years. I drag race my FD and can get some killer 60ft times of 1.6 without a 2 step by dropping the clutch at 7K rpms. However....the clutch does not last long when doing this.....I tend to replace it about every 20 - 30 launches.

Does anyone know what the best clutch to use for my application for around $500 or less? Eventually I would like to do a Carbon clutch but they run a couple grand.

Looking for someone who runs 10's or 11's that has had good experience with a particular clutch!

I run the ACT 6 Puck Unsprung.

Best bang for your doller is the ACT 6 puck w/ the extreme pressure plate.
Or you can spend $1650 for the Exedy Triple Disc, like I did...lol....

Lupe, how many launches would you expect to get on the ACT? How long have you been running it? Who would you buy it from and how much?

I've had the same clutch for 5 years :rlaugh: :rlaugh: and I've done sooo many launches on this it's not even funny.

I would buy from Gotham or whoever has it in stock.

Do you slip the clutch or drop it? I have no idea how you are not going through clutches?

I drop it......... I'll be leaving off the 2 step at 8K this spring so we'll so how well it holds up.

Dan Schecter is using the same clutch and he's pulling low 1.3XX short times.

Well you two are running the times I want.....so I will take your advise....is the model number of the clutch you recommend ZX3-XTR6? That should be the 6 puck unsprung in the extreme lineup.

LUPE 05-19-06 03:54 PM

Yep..........

Another option is the ACT Pressure plate with the Clutchnet 6 puck disc but with springs. I find the one with the springs are a little easier on your drivetrain, I've been using this setup for a few years with no issues so far.

act has released there new sprung 6 puck should be a little easier for street driving and still hold for the track

MichaelB145 05-24-06 10:22 PM

I just got the ACT 6 puck unsprung Extreme.....I will let you guys know how it works after the June 11th NHRA import drags!

MichaelB145 05-28-06 09:30 PM

For you guys who have the ACT 6puck extreme unsprung......is the clutch really ruff on decel or nuetral? The clutch feels very good on accelaration but the stick shift vibrates a little otherwise.

Also, do I need to break this clutch in? I have about 100 easy miles on it, but was told the ceramic clutch doesn't need to be broken in.

LUPE 05-28-06 11:06 PM

It's def a jerky clutch....... I didn't really break mine in. Not sure what the recommended break in is though.

Tonight I drove it fast for the first time and I think I'm screwed....The whole car shakes in 4th gear....I think the flywheel was reserfaced too many times. There wasn't much of a step anymore and I think this is why the clutch is so shaky.

Do you guys think this will hurt my clutch or just give me a rough ride? Also, I'm wondering if I put my stick shift together inncorrectly since there is a little play in it. I can lift up on the stick shift and it will move about 1/8 of an inch.

LUPE 05-29-06 10:01 AM

You have your trans/powerplant frame bolted down tight right?

MichaelB145 05-29-06 11:52 AM

Yes the power plant frame is tight.

MichaelB145 05-29-06 12:31 PM

Could it have something to do with the driftshaft? How about the pilot bearing installed incorrectly?

Also, my buddy has a brand new ACT lightweight flywheel.....If I install this will it kill my 60ft times and the speed of my shifting?

It could have to do with the driveshaft yes but it's most likely what you've replaced recently which is the flywheel.

I wouldn't go with the lightened flywheel. I would just get a nice used stocker.

you may have cracked you PPF with the new clutch setup.
