2 Step Pill
Need help. Recently installed a 2 step and it seems to work just fine with the 3000 pill that came with the unit (bought it used). i purchased some new pills 6000-6800 but they are not as long as the pill that came with the 2 step (See picture below). they also have different tips (See Picture) the new pill seems to be loose when installed as apposed to the pill that came with the unit fits nice and snug.
Are there different types of pills? did i purchase the wrong ones? have you guys ever run into this? the reason i ask is because when i install the 6K pill it doesn't build any boost and it does not pop like a 2 step should. my thought is that the pill is not reach deep enough and does not build up the resistance that it should. going back to Murrays Speed (the place that sold me the pills) but thought i would ask here first? thanks simon http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54.../2StepPill.jpg |
we have had different style pills in our box and they all work fine, although if your worried about it falling out or vibrating loose, dab a dot of silicone/RTV on it to hold it to the box, works a treat for our race car.

just dont put it on the pins itself, i know it sounds obvious but im just sayin . Worst case from using older to new pills , it wont limit when the pill says it is, but youll get the jist of when its limiting once pedal mashed haha

I just went with 2 adjustable modules. That way I can play around with differant combo's. You running 2 pills in or just one?

well i did some more testing today and found out that my trailing coils are shutting off when i activate the 2 step via a switch but the leading coil is not shutting off? i hooked up a light to each coil and when i activate the switch, the trailing light completly shuts off. the leading light flickers never shuts completly off like the trailing. i have the following hooked up http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54...gu/2step-1.jpg my biggest question is the wire coming from 30 on the relay. i have it hooked up to the red/black wire that brings power for all three plugs. is this wrong? thanks for the help. |
i think i have figured it out. i believe that the 30 pin must be connected to the 12v source that powers the igniter. i will try it when i get home and see if that works.

Your leading coil is not supposed to shut off w/ the switch, only the trailing. That's what the relay in your diagram is for, otherwise the trailing coils would allow the engine to keep revving. The leading coil will be limited by the 2-step/MSD box if it's hooked up right.
Make sure you have it wired up right, and when you hold the button put the pedal right to the floor. You said you have the 8000 and 3000 pills, are you trying to 2-step it at 3000 RPM? The 2-step module only switches between 1 pill (normal RPM) and another pill (2-step RPM) while you hold the switch. |

So I couldn't wait for the weekend. Pedal to the floor w 6000 pill got 2.1 psi. With 6800 pill got 3.1 psi. This seems low? I have an HKS T51RKAI, which I know is pretty laggy but damn 3 psi at 6800? Let me know what u guys think. It still does not sound the like the two steps I have heard in the past. No popping or banging, just bounces of the pill limit?

Your relay for the trailings is wrong, you want to take your power to the trailings from pin 87 (normally closed) this way when the relay is activated it clicks over to 87a(normally open) breaks the contact and shuts OFF power to the trailing coils, also instead of the "toggle switch" you want to use the clutch switch as the actual trigger, or youll be coming out of the hole still on the 2 step till you flip off the toggle. the toggle should be the master arm... 2ndly do you have both pills in the 2 step? like 6800, and the 8k? ive heard it wont work right without both in. but without shutting off the trailings it wont be the same either https://www.rx7club.com/rotary-drag-racing-167/how-wire-line-lock-2-step-899896/ helped me |
So disconnect 87a and connect it to 87?
I followed that thread and made my own diagram since Iwas not using a line lock. Looks like I did it wrong. Two step has both the 8000 pill and the 6800 pill in the modules. I have also heard that it does not work if both pills are not in it. Thanks for the help. Simon

Actually I think I should have a cup of coffe b4 I typed... i wrote wrong.... not uisng 87 to trigger the MSD box threw me off... your diagram seems correct...
85 and 86 are the coil pins. Normally, it doesn't matter which way you pass the current, because if you hook it up backwards, the coil will still activate the relay. 30, 87, and 87a are the other three pins. 87 and 87a are the two contacts to which 30 will connect. If the coil is not activated, 30 will always be connected to 87a. Think of that pin as "87, always connected". When current is applied to the coil, 30 is connected to 87. 87 and 87a are never connected to each other. you want to power the trailings all the time except when you have your 2 step active, +power to pin 30, then the power wire going to the TRAILING coils comes from pin 87A, so when you activate the relay you drop power to the trailings... your inital diagram seems correct.... are you sure your relays dropping power try a higher pill than 6800.... for my little 60-1 i see 6psi @ 6700.... you need more rpm Yous foots planted through the floorboard right? |
Thanks for the clarification. I am an electrical idiot so that really helps. I connected a light bulb to the trailings so I know for sure that they are not getting power when the two step is activated. I will try some higher rpm pills to see what happens and report back. Again, thanks for the help.

What ECU are you using? If you want more boost at the same RPM, try using the switch to toggle an AUX input to retard timing and add fuel (trim)
