Where would those 4 studs be located?

How much does he charge you for this?

He's a family friend so he charged me for the cost of the taps. :) I'm going to start offering the service through my shop and contract it out through him. Would you like me to get you a price?

slo 01-28-08 08:32 PM

yes please, PM me with price, more than likely I just want to do four of the studs, probably the four corners that don't have factory dowel pins.

If and only if its cheaper, I might be willing to go in with someone on a full stud kit from wherever is the cheapest, and then only do the four as stated above.

Don't forget the cordless drill also!

a friend of mine had a tractor that leaked oil badly from the oil pan. instead of fixing it, he got one of those little pumps from Harbor Freight and rigged it up so it leaked into a bucket and every so often he would run the cordless drill (which was duct taped to the tractor) for a little while and pump the oil from the bucket back into the oil cap.

He did ti for like a year before he fixed it, worked fine the whole time. lol.

anyone ever though of just doing three studs on the spark plug side and 2 on the exhaust side, or some other combination, instead of all or all but one?[/QUOTE]

I know a build that does this.

The FOUR studs only need to be along the combustion side.... All the flex in the engine originate from this point.

Lol, that doesn't even come close to any of the machine shops I've worked in. :rlaugh:

You guys do know that studs require a different torque to get the same tension as a bolt right? Using only 4 studs instead of the whole set will require you to run a different torque than what is specified because you are mix matching fastener types.

But then again this guy has been a machinist for over 25 years and works at a company that uses CNC mills & lathes to modify guns & rifles for the S.B. Sheriff's department and the Twentynine Palms Marine Base. :) He's got the process down where the engine will go together, albeit a little snug, at .503" on the holes...we ended up taking it to .508" as recommended by the kit. For those who don't know the studs themselves are .500"...we're talking the thickness of a piece of paper in difference.

As for the rotor housings, he made the tooling as such that it will take 15 minutes to get the rotor housing to match the rest of the engine using his mill and various piloted reamers he's custom made. :)

Can you post the instructions for installing the studs, I want to know whats involved before buying it.
