Directfreak, Asleep, any updates? Are you still running over one bar with no problems on these stock seals?

My friend just ran 7.9@169mph running a 13B peripheral port and a huge doze of methanol on a large turbo 673+ rwhp on the 2mm 2 piece mazda oem apex seals.

Hi Judge,

thanks for the info. So what do you think the problem is? Does it lie in the exhaust porting, or was there perhaps a bad batch of seals? There was a rash of problems around June, and it seems to have quieted down since. Any info you give would be invaluable, as you have your hands on many more motors than most of us :)

thanks-
Rich

Rich,

Running 22psi on pump gas all last week...another 1k miles. Turned the boost down as I am playing with boost response and trying to push it around better. I had a leaking BOV which I had to clean, lube, and beef up the spring.

Hey Tony,

checked out the link to your rex, looks pretty nice and clean. I have FM5s in the same size....what size tires are you running? Also, how did you shape your exhaust ports? I am wondering if that is what caused the problem. Mine have a gradual (curved) opening and abrupt (horizontal) closing, and some of the others that had the seals fail had similar ports. I wish like hell I would have taken pictures before assembling the motor.

I cracked an apex seal at 27K original miles for a reason I don't understand. The car is at RP right now. Any of you guys running 3mm seals or have an opinion on them???, all of these recent problems with the 2mm 2 peice seals has gotten me scared.

When i got an engine rebuild by redline, Mike recommended me the 2 pieces seal. I went with ceramic one tho.

Honestly Nic, if I was you I would go with the 3mm seals. Better safe than sorry, and my bud alan had a good experience with an RP 3mm motor. Lasted him many years of abuse.

Rich,

Had the FM5's since the first group buy off the big list. The Nitto Extreme II's look smaller than the old F1 Goodyears I had on the back, both in 275x40s...255x40 in the front.

Honestly, I have no idea what the ports looked like. Rob Golden did the porting and I never asked what shape he used. He did experiment quite a bit based on what I needed in terms of overlap. I will say that what I could see and feel he went to quite a bit of detail to be smooth. I trust Rob.

Thanks rich, 3mm are what I have decided to go with, I can't wait to get the car back on the road... it feels like it's been soooo long now.

Rich,
Demetrios has been using them for while now. His current motor has seen over 40 passes. His fastest is a 849@164mph on the stock seals and this is on a steet port. (No aggresive bridge or PP) We also used them in my CYM. I have a T88H and plan on running 32psi on race gas. We havn't wired it up yet, but I have full confidence in the seals.

Tease ;). More details, por favor.

I now have 5k miles on my seals, which are the ones I was worried about b/c I started the damn thread :D. No problems thus far, they have seen 12-13 psi consistently and 14-16 psi occasionally. No problems thus far, starts right up (even when heat-soaked), pulls good vacuum, makes great power. I am beginning to think that the initial scare was due to a bad batch and/or poor engine building.

Marcel Burkett 12-16-04 05:30 PM

Well I guess I'll be taking the plunge next , 'cause I cant seem to find the 3 piecers anyhere !!
