what engine should go in my 1970 R100...

hey guys, i have a 1970 mazda r100 that has been modified for racing but it's been sitting for over 18 years. When it was parked, the 12a inside of it ran but obviously will need a lot to run right again. The guy we aquired it from had a 13b turbo in it untill he blew out the seals. so i know it can handle the 13b but which motor and what accessories would be best for making it a "respectable" rotary. it will mostly be used for transportation but i still want to have the power to smoke a civic whenever i need/want to.

welcome.

you're going to use that rarity for daily transport? wow. your dollar, i guess ...

anyway, go with a S4 or S5 13B-T setup. S5 would be my first choice, but S4 is just as good. that modded front fascia looks like it can take a decent intercooler up there, so either engine should be able to take a decent aftermarket turbo setup. straighten out the brakes and tires and i guess you should have a decent daily driver. just seems like an unnecessary risk to me.

1985gslse 05-03-07 01:17 PM

well...it wont be my "daily" driver...only when it rains...and in western washington it tends to rain alot... my pickups engine just blew and i have to wait till i'm 18 to get my motorcycle endorcement on my license because of my parents or i would be getting 35mpg on my old suzuki...why do you say it would be a risk to drive daily? just out of curiosity...

diabolical1 05-04-07 12:05 AM

because nice cars can't seem to escape morons. this car is not something that you can run down to Schuck's and buy parts for when there is a mishap that ends in "crunch". as you said it rains a lot in WA ...

diabolical1 05-04-07 12:12 AM

besides, in your original post you've already copped to wanting to drag race Civics - the car with probably one of the highest moronic owner/driver populations around today.

2 + 2 ...

1985gslse 05-04-07 12:21 AM

hey now...i may be young...still have a lot to learn about life and how things work (especially with rotary engines) but i'm not stupid...i know my limits and there usually way before the limits of the car...i understand that parts will be a little scarce to come by but thats no reason not to drive it from point a to point b...why have the car if your not going to use it...now i'm one of the teens who actually give a damn about the vehicle their driving instead of the next adrenalin rush...yes i know i said that i'd want to have the power to smoke a civic if need be...so what...it doesnt mean i'm going to be draggin it on back country roads all day long...i just want the power when i need it...for getting on the freeway or for drags on a track...whichever it is...this doesnt make me the typical teenage moron driver who you see plastered all over the front page of the newspaper with whats left of a vintage familia rotary coupe after he gets into a wreck goin 130mph...dont be so quick to judge when you dont know anything about me or my driving style

1985gslse 05-04-07 12:41 AM

i posted this thread for advice on which engine would be best for the needs i requre...power whenever need be for whatever reason i wish, and reliability to get from point a to point b. it doesnt matter if i race the thing...i came here for advice and tips...not criticism because of my age and intentions...it was built to race before i got it and by god its going to be one of the best when i'm done with it...so if you have any personal thoughts about how idiotic and stupid i am for using it as a daily driver...heres an idea...keep it to your F ing self! anyone who posts in the rotary performance section of forums...well...heres and idea...WANTS THEIR ROTARY TO PERFORM!! it doenst matter what you think should be done with it...answer the peoples question or not...but either way...keep your opinions about how much of a moron they are to yourself.

Cool looking car.

I think a nice Renesis motor from an RX8 might be interesting.

Or just a normally aspirated 13B with a street port and some Mega Squirt EFI.

Not sure what tranny you could use. It seems like you'd be stuck using a tranny from a 1st or 2nd gen RX7 since the 3rd gen and RX8 use a Power Plant Frame.

Good luck.

dude, first of all ... CALM DOWN! either get thicker skin or be prepared to leave this forum because people here (and just about everywhere) are going to attack simply for your age. however, i'm not one of them. i didn't assume jack shit about you and i usually like to let people open their mouths and give me whatever length of rope i need. second of all, let's get it straight - i'm not apologizing for my comments as they still stand, but i will explain them a bit because i think you misunderstood me. if i were going to call YOU a moron, trust me, there would be no space for interpretation.

when i made the first "moron" comment, i was making a general reference to people. period! and i am NOT wrong to do so. you do have to share the road, no? these are what daily driver's are subject to. i mean, people do lolligag on their phones and daydream about Mel Gibson (or whatever) and a plethora of other shit while their supposed to be focused on driving even in Washington state (rhetorical question - i used to live in WA and i traveled the entire state), don't they? THEY are morons!!! and they are everywhere!!! my point was they're never going to run into that old Fiero or Pacer or Neon whenever their stupidity culminates in an accident - it will be the '68 Charger or the 2002tii or ... yes, the R100. shit, my brother just bought an Rx-4, i know how hard it is to find parts. that's all i was saying. no judgments to you - you never even mentioned your age until your second post.

i think it's interesting how you focused on everything but the advice that i offered in my first post.

oh ... and for the record, my personal thoughts are that if a car like that is to die, then it should die on track, "all-out, right-foot-through-the-floorboard, fire-out-the-tailpipe-as-one-last-fuck-you-to-the-world" - nothing left but a photo. i'm all about rotary performance and anyone, of any age, that shares the same passion. to hell with those that are in it for novelty. i've been doing this longer than you've been alive - and THAT was a comment on your age. ;)

secondly, when i posted the addendum after re-reading your original post, it was merely to, again, illustrate that greater "risk" that you asked me to explain. unless you drive a Civic, too, it should be clear that i was not calling you a moron. and even if you do, there is no way that you're going to convince that (in general) chances are if you're racing a Civic on the road, it's someone aged 30 or less and they will probably be a moron. for some reason, i've noticed many of the younger (30 or less) Civic, '90-93 Accord, and Maxima owners all seem to be morons and act accordingly on the road - but, i digress ... i know non-moronic Civic racers are out there because i have a few friends that are non-moronic. however, i also have moronic friends with Civics, too and the ratio is not even close!!! you're also not going to convince me that the risk of "something happening" is not increased while racing - street or track. that is fact.

this is the Internet and i guess between the lack of vocal tones and the way that written responses inherently fester - there can be a lot of space for misunderstandings. so at this point, i'll consider this a no foul. if you still think i'm being hard on you or calling you names or anything, then it's now all on you. i think i've clarified my previous statements enough.

now ...

if you'll quit hijacking your own thread, i think i offered you 13B-T advice, someone offered a 20B and someone else offered Renesis :). personally, i wouldn't attempt a 20B with an R100, but it's your car. do what you wish. i am, however, tempted to second the Renesis idea, just for the sake of karma. however, i think the 13B-T is a much simpler choice - done to death, i know - but in terms of getting the car completed, i think it will probably take the least amount of time.

i'm open for discussion ...

FelixIsGod29X 05-10-07 03:05 PM

PLEASE FOR GOD'S SAKE DONT DO AN LS1. A 20b would be wicked sick but the chances of you being able to find the right one and making it work right will be hard.(Nothing againts you, hell i bet i couldnt do a 20b yet) Your best bet would surely be a 13bt swap. An S5 would be pretty damn nice but are a tad more pricey than an S4. I would shoot for an S4 then. Im sure someone on here does have a full swap or close to it for sale. Good luck with it, the car looks pretty neat and i bet the weight of that with a 13bt in it will make you more happy than needed.

FelixIsGod29X 05-10-07 03:06 PM

Oh, and dont bother with a renesis it will totally not be worth it in the end.....I can guarantee it!

If a Ls1 will fit, do it. It'll be fast as shit, get great gas mileage, and be reliable.

+1 to that!

BASTARD 05-22-08 09:52 AM

Just build yourself a nice fat streetport 12a... it will rev to the moon and out last a piston motor all day... once you happy with it, then move on to the turbos and 20b's
