Actually, NASA/Curtiss Wright concluded that a high strength stainless material was the best option for rotors. Remember that the bulk of Wankel research was conducted in the 60s and 70s, before Titanium alloys were mainstream.

Both e-shaft flex and housing twist are directly related to the weight of the rotor. No one is trying to make stronger rotors, they are trying to make lighter ones. Aluminum is a bad choice because it is soft and not very stiff, both of which cause seal clearance issues. Titanium is much better, especially with an appropriate surface oxide layer.

Not sure what happened with the OP in particular, but I think you will see Ti rotors in some engines before too long. Especially if Mazda actually comes out with a new rotary one of these years and injects some life into the wankel aftermarket/racing industry.

no news in so long , maybe the whole thing blew up , still would be awesome hearing that thing rev up

The engine hasn't blown up but it has been pulled for Inspection. All is looking good, hopefully will be put back together and rack up some more miles. I keep trying to volunteer to rack up the miles on them but its falling in deaf ears:(

There was a slight problem which led to the engine being pulled but it turned out to be a fried Apexi ecu making the engine run like a sack of shit, and like I said everything was fine with the engine.

Any chance of seeing the rotors after they were ran?

Man I wish there were some pics of the rotors, housings, and seals from the teardown...I wanna see how everything is holding up..

The OP doesn't spend a lot of time online, and very busy with his business. They currently are developing a drag FD, once the cars running fast the Ti rotors will make an appearance in the engine. Which is already being revved to 11,000rpm:D

How about titanium sleeves for old housings? Worn stock friction surface could be milled out and a replacement sleeve pressed in.

Not sure that would work so well. The problem being heat transfer from titanium to aluminum which would likely decrease cooling capabilities of the engine.
