Rotary (or RX7) -specific brands

Hey guys!

I am trying to get a feel for the brands and tuning companies that specifically target the rotary crowd.

I want to understand which brands put out better products, which are more value-oriented, which should I stay away from, etc.

Do people prefer to go to certain brands for certain needs? (e.g. cooling vs aero vs suspension vs engine vs turbo) Or do all of these brands really do all aspects of tuning well??
To give an example, I wouldn't buy Apex coilovers -- I'd go to Cusco or DG-5. I wouldn't buy a Blitz intercooler; I'd go ARC or HPI.

So far the rotary-specific brands I've found are:

AutoEXE
Car Shop Glow
Feed (Fujita Engineering)
Knight-Sports
RE Amemiya
Revolution
Super Now

What rotary/rx7 brands am I missing? (I'm not talking about the "big-4" of Apex, Blitz, HKS, Trust/Greddy.)

So, something I've been struggling with is that Super-Now have a very "fun loving" approach, but their stuff isn't cheap... and their website doesn't show any product (that I could find). They direct you to rhdjapan.
On the other hand, Knight-Sports has a super professional looking website, but I'm not sure what the quality of their stuff is like. It's hard to compare these two companies without having a specific like-for-like product in your hands (or on your car)!

Any guidance would be appreciated... Thank you!!

Don't fool yourself thinking the quality stuff only comes from Japan man. I know its easy to wear the pink shades and worship jdm goodies because of them being Japanese, but nowadays the 'western' (and Aussie/NZ) love and support for rotaries matches and in some ways easily surpasses that of Japan. For instance, take a look at Gleaseman's rotary manifolds; you're not gonna find that level of quality from Japan.

Long story short; look for a level of quality and price that fit your bill, and try letting go of the Japanese bias a bit 😄

Thanks, man, I live in Hong Kong where parts are easier and cheaper to get from Japan than from anywhere else (less mainland China and Taiwan), so they are a natural go-to for me.

What are other great rotary AUS/NZ companies or shops?
I know Hypertune do great SR20/S-chassis stuff, for example, and GK Tech for Nissan suspension parts.

I will say however that my very first part was the pineapple racing air pump delete and tensioner pulley set, so I am absolutely not against buying from non-japanese manufacturers!
(Their reviews were just so much better than those of the greddy kit!)

Keeping this on-topic, I would add to my list: TCP Magic, who sponsor Mad Mike...

Cheers for any more (helpful) input that anyone may have!

In my experience you cant go wrong with any of the big name brands in Japan. All of those you listed use their products on track. I have a ton of feed parts, a few re amemiya and super now. I've come to find that the products may not be perfect aesthetically, which we kind of expect for the premium we pay but they are very functional.

The engine in my car was rebuilt by FEED in 2008, its still going strong. I will continue to buy their products.

I think you will find most of the suspension products offered by those rotary specific tuning houses are modified or setup (different spring rates and/or valving) from the major brands like DG-5 or others. As far as aero and cooling go they each have their own solutions but there's little out there (in english, atleast) to compare them and objectively state which is better. If you're not pushing 10/10ths on the track I think you'd be fine with items from any of them. They've been around this long for a reason. I went with an HKS V mount setup because it uses factory style radiators for ease of replacement vs the bespoke units in the other setups, for example, so those are things to consider also.

To go with the thread, R-Magic is another rotary specific brand. Full function engineering also offers some great stuff from here in the USA. I have their air pump delete pulley.

Thanks, @Mazdarian and @AE_Racer !
AE - did Feed do any porting to your engine, or just a rebuild?

Updated list (for posterity):

Auto EXE
Car Shop Glow
Feed (Fujita Engineering)
Knight-Sports
RE Amemiya
Revolution
R-Magic
Super Now
TCP Magic

My engine was rebuilt and ported to their "Nur Spec" as confirmed by engraving on my center iron. Their website just lists it as "special porting" and they did not respond to my English email. Judging by engine sound/idle, its definitely not aggressive.

And how could we forget SCOOT?!

j9fd3s 05-25-19 07:02 PM

RS Pantera does some really hardcore stuff, they are the ones that make the 8.3:1 rotors among other things.

i don't know much about them, but i like the yellow and gold that the Demo cars usually end up in

Is that now AutoExe? I notice that some AutoExe products (sway bars) appear to have "Racing Beat" shown on them.

Autoexe is a Japanese company and Racing Beat is an American company. I believe they've both had close relationships with Mazda and may have shared parts/ideas but they are different companies.

Just found out today that FAMSPEED shut down in December 2019 :(

I never thought that the day would come when the long-established tuning shop, which had been in business for 40 years, would close. 2 days left I've had a lot of things for about 12 years at this store, but I'm lonely to lose them ...

adey 09-14-20 04:44 AM

Ah, that's sad! But inevitable, unless they start diversifying into piston engine cars.
You see a bunch of these ex-exclusive rotary brands moving into mostly S2000 and BRZ/new 86 products. Makes sense, but also kind of sad that there isn't a new rotary car for them to produce for...
