Rotary engine parts will prices go up
 

Well i have been in this rotary game since 1992. My first rotary being a 1st gen gsl. Currently i own a 3rd gen fd which i purchased in 1998. I have noticed that rotors,housings and rebuilt kit appear to continue to increase in price. Like to see if anyone has any ideas of what the prices are going to do. Higher or lower

All about economics, the demand for them is dwindling every day, so the cost will rise

when has the price for anything gone down?

the bright spot now though is that in the old days we used to get a rebuild that had spray paint right over the grease for $1800, and now we get a 100% brand new engine for $4k

I'm in for over twice that (closer to 3x) and my FD still isn't running right.

4k for a keg maybe, but a new longblock, bolt-in REW engine will be closer to 10k or more once all's in place and the car is driveable.

Rolled the dice and paid 1600 for a jdm long block in Orlando. Opened it up to find out the engine was blown but engine parts good. Bought a rebuilt kit had my mechanic rebuild it with a street port. 1800 plus 3400 for rebuilt kit and labor. At the end of the day paid 5200 for the engine. Not cheap but not 10000 dollars either. Ofcourse this does not include things i modded like different fuel rail injectors well you know how this game goes $$$$$$ lol. Buying new housings is crazy expensive now and days. I wonder if some aftermarket company will make cheaper versions. I think they would make a killing

no aftermarket company is ever going to be able to make rotor housings for less than what you pay mazda for them. plus you get better quality for the most part. the steel/chrome sleeves are already re-engineered and not a simple chrome plating that youd likely find with small one-offs. then there is the exhaust sleeve inserts which are a cast inconel.

I saw a rotary shop in Australia making there own plates. The company is calles PAC. I wonder if they plan on taking a shot at it

Some people are making aluminum plates because there's functionality there that Mazda ones don't have - weight reduction.

Nobody is going to bother to make rotor housings unless 1: Mazda stops making them or 2: they come up with some innovation to make people willing to pay more. The economics don't make sense at all otherwise.

in related news Mazda USA ran out of GSL-SE rotor housings, so they ordered more from Mazda Japan.

pretty amazing that they still have parts for a 30 year old car that isn't even in the parts catalog anymore.

a slightly less related piece of news is that that catalog, the current GEPC that the dealerships use, is flash based, so its days are numbered. this is good, it has a couple of nice features, but otherwise is really clunky and slow, not to mention counter intuitive and frustrating.

That sounds promissing for sure
