OS Giken STR22c vs Exedy zm022sd twin disc
 

i just thought i would post up my experiences with these clutches to help other prospective clutch buyers...

my car is mainly used for street driving so i wanted a clutch that has a smooth engagement...im not so concerned about pedal stiffness but i dont want a clutch thats rock hard...

moving from the stock clutch to an ACT heavy duty PP and street disc i drove this for about 3 years and it held a fair amount of power i made 375whp with it and it didnt slip (probably was close)...

i decided to change to a clutch that would hold more power as i would be stepping up the power...after doing some research it narrowed it down to the os giken str22c twin disc and the exedy zm022sd twin disc...

the exedy twin was highly recommended on the forum...the os giken str22c not so much...the os giken site and brochure makes the str22c sound so streetable and comfortable...also the local dealer told me that he installed one and it was really streetable (i kno...kinda stupid to trust someone who is trying to sell it to you)...so i decided to go with the os giken twin disc...

when it came it costed $2350US after duty and taxes...and it required a pull to push convertor(which it came with)...after the install i was seriously disappointed...the clutch was very soft probably even softer than the stock PP but the engagement was terrible...very harsh...at first it was bad but not that bad....but after the clutch had broken in it was awful....if you tried to easily come off the clutch it would judder horribly...it was barely manageable on flat roads but on areas with inclines, stop and go traffic is unbearable...so after a couple thousand kms i decided to change to the exedy twin during the engine rebuild...

when the engine was rebuilt and the new exedy zm022sd twin installed(costed $1666US after taxes and duty) i was really happy and relieved that the clutch was actually really nice to drive...the pedal pressure was probably the same as the ACT heavy duty PP...the engagement was very smooth...no more juddering and harsh jerky motions...as for the os giken twin disc i gave it to my brother for his 1st gen....

the twin disc rattle isnt that noticeable really you have to listen for it to really notice it...

i m very happy with my STR2C and it is indeed very streetable. not sure what went wrong with your setup

:+1: i love my os giken! I have abused mine to no end and pushed over 500whp through it. Launch after launch i havent had an issue to this day. And mine feels very close to stock, might actually have a softer pedal than stock. As far as harsh engagement go's it seems the hotter the clutch gets, the harder it grips. Under normal driving in traffic its great, but if you are one of those people that keeps the clutch pedal pressed for long periods it will get really hot and engage like a unsprung 4 puck. Im not saying thats the problem you had but my clutch has been great from day one. But if the exedy works for you thats all that matters plus the exedy is cheaper, and cheaper to buy rebuild parts for. Just the PP and disks for the OS are $1300.

Anyone else have any personal experience with these two? I'm running the Exedy Twin currently and was curious if the OS Giken is indeed more street friendly?

+1 for OS-Giken. Them are rebuildable at reasonable prices which make them a burgain on TCO + you can through what ever power you want on them.

Never used Exedy, so can`t comment on them. Actually, no instresst in Exedy at all, as for rebuilt parts availability.

My STR2C setup never had problems. Daily drive my car everyday rain, snow or shine and it was easy to work with.
It's all preference wise though, I have heard some people complain about the STR2C on skylines and such but meh

How do you like the exedy, just curious.

It's a little much for the street if you deal with a ton of stop/go traffic and speed bumps like I do on my daily commute. When I took the car out to the Canyons it felt amazing.
