Intercooler...best one

Who make the best intercooler? I may be able to use stock mount but I'm not crazy about the heat soak problem. I'd like to go front mount but the labor may keep me from doing it? What should i go with both have ups and downs, let me know what you guys have and what you like best? Would just like some input on which direction to go!!!!
Thanx!

My personal opinions ofcourse...

SMIC - M2 large
FMIC - RX7fashion..

what I have...Well ASP Large...= M2...I got it back when Kevin W. was still making them ...

JoeD 12-31-01 04:23 PM

for FMIC's the best are Apex'i, William's Tuning ( www.turbostreetfighter.com ), and GReddy, IMO. i dont like the RX-7 Fashion FMIC because the endtanks are terribly designed, giving a lot of pressure drop.

as for SMIC's, i think the best are the M2 Large or PFS. but im not too fond of SMIC's unless you are building a track/Auto-x FD.

LET THE FMIC VS. SMIC DEBATE BEGIN! :p

M2 Large may be overkill - tests show the M2 Med is 99% as effective and dosen't require battery relocation. Also I think M2 is discontuing the large one.
so I would go M2 Med.
The Greedy SMIC is the best of the true stock mounts (fits w/ stock battery & intake) has very efficient tank design & maximized core area.

2FAST7S 01-02-02 04:37 PM

I should probably also mention that i do not have the stock front bumper anymore. went with a knightsport twin fog lights. It does offer a bigger opening as opposed to the stock. That should make a difference, right? specially for a smic.
Thanx for the help. M2 was always at the top of the list(yes the medium one since i wasnt too crazy about moving the batery). Greddy and Apexi were there also.
What about spearco do they make them or is it just a custom order for them?

Jason 01-02-02 08:04 PM

The best front mounts are the Apexi and Greddy.
A good stock mount is the M2 medium or large. Im carrying a medium intercooler that is similar to the M2 at the rx7store. Check it out here: http://www.rx7store.net/intercoolers.htm
Very nice design and you have the option of using the Greddy elbow or the stock elbow.

Be nice to see a picture of the Greddy SMIC installed in an FD.

I will try to find one and put it up.

Come on JoeD looks are not everything... I have yet to see any numbers proving the rx7fashion IC has a lot of pressure drop due to how the endtanks are shaped..PROVE IT...just because you like the way the turbostreetfigheter one looks..doens't mean it's going to perform either...all FMIC will or should have slightly increased pressure drop as compared to a properly designed SMIC..

And what do you mean you are not too fond of SMIC unless you are building a track/auto-x car...I think that's what a FD are made for...yes they can be made to go down the quarter mile too.....

ASP racing aka M2 large, I have it and I love it.

I like my front mount intercooler from XS:D
way better than rx7fashions

FMIC - Worth It

I'm very happy with my FMIC from RotaryExtreme (know sold by RX7 Fashion). It may not be the easiest to install, but worth the extra work (it's not difficult, just takes time). I like this FMIC because you need have to move the battery and I could still use my cold air box. I have not noticed any significant pressure drop. I have noticed the extra horse power. Tomorrow I'm going to Dyno shop to having my FD tested.

Her's a pic of my old Greddy SMIC:

This is not a comment on any particular IC, but rather a clarification about the effects of pressure drop in general...

Pressure drop is not necessarily noticable on your boost gauge. It just results in less power at the same boost level than an equivalently efficient setup with less pressure drop. The reason is that your turbos have to make more boost at the compressor outlet to maintain the same manifold pressure. That means more backpressure (the turbos offer more exhaust restriction when they have to make more boost) and thus less flow and power.

Spearco makes the IC itself. That is just the core and the endtanks. You can buy a Spearco then do your own duct and IC piping. Depending on your skills and situation that could be your best bet. Most companies seem to use Spearco IC and just put piping and ducting together in a package and sell it.

kevinmfaust 01-08-02 09:16 PM

The M2 large intercooler duct is piss poor. There is a nice thick gasket around the duct but it does not seal to the intercooler. The duct fits tight to the intercooler at the top but it is 1/2 inch away at the bottom. The duct opening is not angled correctly to fit tight to the intercooler. It is also about 2 to 2 1/2 inches to narrow. The drivers side of the intercooler is covered completely by the duct but the passengers side has 2 to 2 1/2 inches of cooling fins outside the duct work. This is stupid as shit because the radiator cooling fan is directly below the exposed intercooler and super hot air flows through the cooling fins of the intercooler and heats up the intercooler. Real dip shit stuff. The duct needs to funnel cool air into the intercooler AND ALSO keep the heat from the radiator out of the it. The pipes are not too bad but the one that goes to the turbo does not fit that well. The intercooler is nice work but the duct is mediocrity at its finest. I am planing to make a new duct out of CF that covers ALL the intercooler soon. Go with the med if you go with M2 or plan on making your own duct.

Hmm... so if i get Spearco to make me a IC similar to the M2 and get a muffler shop ot make me ducts.. i would get a better deal and better quality IC right?

Does that intercooler work with the efini Y-pipe or does it require modification, in the same respect that the M2 does?

I would have a fabrication shop make the duct, not a muffler shop. Most muffler shops have enough problem connecting exhaust parts, let alone designing something.

But you have the general idea. If you are confident you can make a better duct and have IC piping that fits together nicely, then you will have a better setup.

I wonder how much M2 would charge for a duct. You could buy the IC ($660 from Spearco) and then make your IC pipes then just buy the duct from them. That seems cost effective, although I do not know of the price of what M2 would charge for the duct.

The M2 ICs do have duct fitment problems, and you really have to play with things to get it to fit perfectly. All the events I go to the M2 unit is still the best one I have seen as far as SMICs go.

Anyone have the demensions of the M2 Large IC and pipe size? Im planning on calling Spearco to see how much they charge for this..

Thanks... Styk33

Styk33 01-10-02 02:40 PM

No problem on the info, I will give out as much as I can remember or have time to type.

IIRC the core is 13x17 on the M2 Large and that is part number 2-172 (from memory) from Spearco. The price is $660 and you specify the size of the inlet/outlet you want and the endtank design. The size of most of the ICs availible for the FD are availible on Steve's Lightning in the World of Thunder website.

Best of luck to you.
