Hybrid rx7 with electric motor
 
I was wondering if rx7 is ideal for being a hybrid with electric motor supplying low rpm muscle.
There some interesting aftermarket ideas like one could retrofit the wheels for low rpm or low speed assist. Michelin active wheels are one example.

i have not seen anyone try it, but i think you're right. it seems like the perfect combination, the electric provides the low speed power, and then the Rotary can turn on and provide the high speed power.

if one were sensible, i think mileage and emissions could be quite good too, you could shut the rotary off at idle/low speed, stuff like that. i don't know much about it, but i'd think if you were only using the electric in the 0-15mph area, you wouldn't need a huge battery either, less weight

Traditional gas/electric hybrid had been for improving gas mileage, so the rotary is a poor starting point for an engine for gas/electric hybrid.

Sounds like you are more interested in electric hybridization for performance enhancement.

There are still cheaper, lighter ways to improve torque, which is probably why most people would not do electric hybrid rotary.

With later series RX-8 Mazda tried to overcome the low rpm torque issue of the rotary with 4.77 rear end gear and a very low 1st gear as well. Obviously, this would not work well for performance figures (0-60 with more shifts) if the rotary had low rpm torque and a low redline, luckily the 13B-MSP was blessed with 9,000rpm redline.

I think an electric hybrid for the rotary that would make great sense is a big pancake motor for the flywheel/starter/alternator like the 1st gen Insight.
1) It is an area of the car where some mass is desirable to start with (flywheel effect) for easy driving with a manual transmission.
2) It can be used for a hit of power every time the gas pedal is put down.
3) The weight of pancake motor and batteries is offset by elimination of flywheel, starter and alternator weight.
4) Engine stop at idle becomes more feasible.
5) When the car has low compression later in life the pancake motor could wake the engine from the dead (literally).

the rotary has more room for improvement, possibly its a better candidate.

for instance i did some testing with my FC vert, and in 100% freeway driving it would get 26mpg, but 100% city driving it was like 11. average was 14-16 mpg. a hybrid brings city mileage up.

granted the 'ultimate' setup with a PP/BP engine and a hybrid gets rid of 90% of the reason to do a PP/BP, the idle.
