Ford 9-Inch

I'm not very bright when it comes to domestics but i know alot of drag racers use ford 9 inch, and i was wondering do rotary drag races use the whole rear end from ford or they just mate the axles to adapt to the LSD all in the mazda drivetrain (brakes and housing)? anybody know?

In my 1st gen im using a 9in centre and axle tubes, and the the mazda backing plates are welded on to the 9in tubes to bolt the calapers to them,
so basically the whole diff assembly is a ford unit,

I've heard the 8.8 works just as well for our application (relativly low torque) and will be much cheaper to build, lighter, smaller, and will take less hp to turn.

LTProject 02-24-03 12:11 PM

call grannys speed shop, theyve got one for 525.00 plus shipping. 9'' with alloy axles and cut down to fit with all the brackets welded on, doesnt come with 3rd member.

600HP CLUB 02-24-03 12:33 PM

there website doesn't have any info on this setup, you have a link for me?

There isn't going to be too much out there cheaper than the Ford 9".

turbostreetfighter 02-24-03 09:54 PM

i am using a ford 8.8 and i got it for free!!! most of the mustang guys switch to the 9" and throw away the 8.8 but since we are way lighter than mustangs and Camaros ,the 8.8 will not break.

I'll be switching to a 8.8 in March.

rotaryengineering 02-25-03 12:16 PM

I asked alot of questions before I made the decision to upgrade my rearend. The combination I ended up going with was a Chevy 12 Bolt rearend. When you look at the powerplants we use there is not alot of torque or horsepower to work with. The reason I chose the 12 Bolt was because it robs the least amount of horsepower than most of the other rearends out there.

I have an 8.8 set up and it work great go to the moser site that might be helpful

8.8's come on every V8 mustang from 87 to 98 and most 99-03 V8 mustangs, you CANT find a cheaper parts source. New axles, gears, and a rebuild cost my friend $300 for his '95. Not exactly expensive.

Ill get under there tonight and get some pics for you,
mine has mini spool, 31 spline billet axles, 1/4" plate brackets, 5.1:1 richmond HD gears (about to be swapped for some 4.3:1)

IMHO they are the best valve for money diff around, we cant get the 8.8 down here so that rules that out,
all up this cost me about $1500us but is it guarenteed not to break and the axles have a you break we replace warrinty on them.

Dale,

Did you have any problems with the watts link when you got your 9 inch? I just got a quote in melbourne and they said around 3 grand for the same as you have but with a 4.3 centre.
But he also said that he would have to modify the length of the arms on the watts link or fit an adjustable panhard rod because of the size of the 9 inch centre.

93redFD 02-26-03 04:28 PM

how much heavier are these rear-ends than the stock oem rear in a fd??? So can you just throw in a ford 9 inch or 8.8 and call it done, or do you still have to upgrade things like lsd, axels ect... i do understand that it isnt a easy job..

10sec rx7 02-26-03 09:25 PM

12at,

it all fitted pretty much straight in, they did bend the watts linkage a little to clear exhuast, i had to shorten the short side a little after that,

if they do it make sure you dont use the standard mazda brackets, they will break trust me, and get a set of lower trailing arms made that are stronger.

i havent had a chance to get under the car for pics yet,

They will set it up for any 5- lug pattern you want. Need to buy a pumpkin too.

The nice thing about the 9" besides its strength is that it's practically generic. You can build probably 4 or 5 different 9" rears using no parts from Ford, with different manufacturers for each part. (The same can be said for the small block Chevy, except the Ford 9" is a decent design... :) )

If you were on the cheap you could just get a 9" from an early Mustang or any of the Ford compact (leaf sprung) cars up to about '80 and weld on the proper mounts for the control arms, and be done with it. Likewise if you wanted an 8.8 you could grab one from a Mustang or other Fox body car, or from a 4.0 Ranger, although the Ranger would require less work to remove all the old brackets. The 8.8 has one flaw, though... it has C-clip axles which means the axles are held in at the very inside ends, so if the axle breaks the axle is no longer connected to the car. this is why cars with 8.8's require C-clip eliminators which retain the axle at the flange end, although these are NOT recommended for cars that see any cornering.

Isn't the Toyota Crown saloon rear diff much bigger, something like 12" ? I know it has been used with success.

Node 03-06-03 02:30 AM

12"? good lord thats big

wptrx7 03-06-03 10:52 PM

arethese only for fd's or can it be used on a fc? would this application only be beneficial to high hp rx7s? if not what are other applications that will make this wort it (drag racing, autox, daily driven)?

600HP CLUB 03-06-03 11:27 PM

ford nine can fit to any-car. just need custom things to make it fit, it's only good if your prolly drag racing.

the ford nine inch is a very strong rear end, can handle alot of torque!

you only need this if your breaking your drive line from massive tq and hp.
