flywheel counterweight???

I pulled my engine today ( rx2 with 1st gen rx7 ) and the flywheel is one piece, is it supposed to be that way? I was going to get a lightened flywheel but you need the counterweight.

Does anyone have an extra counterweight they are willing to part with or some advice on how to proceed.

Your flywheel has an imbalance built into it. It acts as a counter weight. If you buy an after market flywheel, you should be able to tell them what engine you have so that they will send you the right counter wieght to attach to it. It will just bolt on. Remember that the year of the counterweight has to match the rotating assembly in the motor (rotors, front counterweight and shaft) not the vehicle or the block itself, just the rotating assembly. Go to http://www.mazdatrix.com/flywheel.htm to see pictures of flywheels with removable counter wieghts.

Hope that helps

I saw that it was weighted but I was expecting it to be 3 pieces, the ring gear, the counter weight and the actuall flywheel. How can I be sure to get the correct counter weight and is there somewhere I can buy just the counter weight ?

Thanks for your help

do a search on an aluminum flywheel that I sold recently. the pics may help you. i

I just looked at that post and that is more/less what I was expecting to see when I pulled the engine but it was a 1 piece + the starter ring gear. How do I know what ballance should be on the engine. The engine I am putting in had no flywheel or front cover when I got it.

here ya go mate - the page that tells you what counterweight you need for each engine

http://www.mazdatrix.com/b5.htm

that was the info I was looking for, thanks ! Now how can I tell what year I have if there is no flywheel ?

Now I know the engine that came out was 80 - 82 roughly but I need the counter weight for the engine I want to put in. How can I identify it?

chairchild 11-29-03 07:18 PM

is it 13b or 12a?

N/A ,turbo, or twin turbo?

You can then work out roughly what model it is, and what counterweight you need then

Detlman 11-29-03 08:23 PM

it is a 12 a n/a

chairchild 11-30-03 06:31 PM

right then - do you have the car it came out of, or any pics of it?

I think there are external differences on the different 12a's, but I cant remeber at this point in time

Detlman 11-30-03 07:48 PM

only the engine, nothing else

chairchild 12-01-03 07:31 PM

well, you've got a choice of three years to choose from

76-80
81-82
83-85

Have there been any modification to the engine itself? Has the rats nest been removed?

chairchild 12-01-03 07:34 PM

oh yeah, you said you still had the flywheel right? then go to here http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/flywheel.htm and match up the design (kinda makes it easier!! lol) :D

Detlman 12-01-03 10:51 PM

nope no flywheel nothing but the front counterweight with no markings on it. The engine was streetported but that is all I know about ti. I dont want to get the wrong weights and have it vibrate or wear faster than it should.

I saw the info on the weights and flywheels but couldnt come up with anything definate, I called a rotary shop near me and they said to bring it down and they could probably tell me what it is.

thanks for all the help !

chairchild 12-02-03 06:11 PM

hope they can tell you mate

Detlman 12-02-03 06:22 PM

yeah me too, I will go there tomorow. If I find anything out I will post what I find. Maybe someone else has the same problem or someone in the future might come looking for this info.

Thanks again for your help.
