why are the center and outer plates iron? do they have to be?

does the rotor housing have an iron insert where the apex seal scrapes like a cylinder liner or is it all aluminum?

the accounting dept said so. no, and they werent until they tooled up for the r100 in 68.

the rotor housing is cast around a peice of steel bent into the correct shape, and then the steel is chrome plated

so then it would be possible to make a one piece block as long as you can install the rotors, right?

The aluminum rotor housing is cast around a sheetmetal insert, which is then hard-chromed for wear resistance.

This was not uncommon back in the day for boingers... many WWII airplane engines had hard-chromed cylinder liners. Then again they were expected to basically run WOT for thousands of hours between overhauls.

actually some of the old boingers are a steel tube and a another flat peice of steel bent around and welded up to be the water jacket

I wouldn't think so. Why would you want to do this?
