Due to high pollution mazda could stop production of rotary engine. :-(
Is that true?

Does it matter? They've already discontinued all of the older stuff, and they don't make any decent cars anymore.

combustion engines will always pollute to some degree so that is totally false. the only factor that may make them obsolete is the fact that hybrid vehicles are going to be a necessity as soon as oil runs out. the rotary can always be adapted to run on alternative fuels like hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, yadda yadda and not pollute any form of carbon monoxides anymore.

We'll just have to wait and see. Mazda has not killed their rotary engine program and they have made a lot of advances in fuel economy and emissions with their prototypes. Here are things we already know that they have developed, at least for experimental engines:

1) new combustion chamber design to reduce flame quenching and HC emissions

2) multiple direct injection prototypes. A patent from a couple years ago shows that the current one uses 3 injectors: one in the intake port on the middle iron, one in the housing pointing toward the intake port, and one in the housing porting toward the plugs

3) plasma ignition system adapted from aviation applications

4) completely redesigned OMP that was installed in the 2009+ Rx-8


The most optimistic way of looking at it is that they have made good progress but they are taking time to get everything right so that the design will last for years. Remember that the 13B was designed in the early 1970's and its basic proportions are still being used in the current Renesis.

the realist in me completely agrees here, but the 5% of optimist in me likes to think it would matter.

Even if they did, we still have the know hows/technology/materials to keep building what we have now anyway.

I mean look at the renesis, thats a modern day rotary engine and IMHO, its not that good.

The best engines are the ones thats bad for the environment. lol
