COP (Coil on Plug) setup

Had an idea. Please tell me what you think

The ignator fires the coil the coil goes throught the cap and to the correct plug depending on the timing. Correct?

now. run the ignator to the coil spot on the dizzy let it route it to the correct coil to fire the plug. The signal would be routed to one of two coils for the trailing.

Now then put a COP (coil on plug) on each plug and then just connect the correct out put line to each COP.

you dont fully take out the Dizzy but you do put the coil very close to the plug and just have small wire lines running around.

The new Chrysler V6's have them and Buscher Racing uses them on their drag cars. Its a good idea, just a matter of wiring.

I first saw a setup on a toyota truck v6. it had a coil on 3 plugs and then wires from the coils to the other 3 plugs. I have sence see it on a F250 SD.

Here is a set for the 2002 mustang

Why would you put a coil so close to the heat of a rotary? Not good!

the exuast is on the opposite side of the sparkplug, so heat wouldnt be a prob at all

Jason from AEM has a coil on plug setup like this on his RX7, here are the pics of it, I'm pretty sure he used Bosch coils from a Subaru SVX to do this:

Magnetti Marelli makes some REALLY good coils. Just hope you have deep pockets.....

I miss my SVX:(

the signal for the ignitor isnt strong enough to jump the gap in the distributor so i dont think that would work. however you can run a half coil on plug setup with an msd 6a or similar. the msd box triggers off the leading sensor and fires 2 coils, one for each leading plug. you cant do this on the trailing due to the timing (think massive detonation), but you could do it if you run 3 msd boxes.

would it be possible to add a third pickup to the Dizzy? How would it need to be offset to make the system work?

On a first gen I don't see why that wouldn't be a good replacement for the Dual Leading Ignitor setup.

I don't know why we couldn't do it for the Trailing as well... about the only thing it would do is decrease the amount of crap in the engine bay.
