Bora XR-1 Race vs. Borla XR-1 Sportsman Race mufler
 

Hey,
I'm about to put together a single 3" exhaust for my FC and am planning on using a Borla XR-1 muffler on it. I was wondering what the differences between the "XR-1 Race Muffler" and the "XR-1 Sportsman Race Muffler" were? Is one louder than the other? How about flow?

Email Borla and ask them.

I am using the Sportsman (16 inch, 3 inch inlet/outlet) it is a larger silencer, will quiet more and flow pretty much the same. Get it, your neighbors, and the friendly police will appreciate it.

I used the XR-1 Race Muffler (16") to quiet down my custom Apexi N1 muffler on my turbo FC.

It definitely quieted my FC down, but not by a WHOLE lot. My car is still loud, but at least it's not raspy and the tone has a lot more bass.

I used the XR-1 race muffler alone and it sounded quite nice.

Keep in mind, I have a straight pipe from the turbine housing to the XR-1 muffler then more straight pipe to the N1 muffler. No silencers or bullets.

Yes...the XR-1 mufflers are great...but, don't last long....actally they do. A friend of mine did have a complete exhaust fabricated using these mufflers on a GSL-SE. Under daily use, they lasted about a 1 and a half. The second fab was done w/ Dynomax mufflers....again lasted about a year. (same w/ mine on my vert).


Now, let change the subject a twist to this story...most you will not like to hear this.....just last week, the same car went in to replace the muffler. Jose (the owner of the muffler shop...a very good friend) did an experiment on a used 5000miled stock Chrysler Sebring muffler. It still looked very new. He did a vacuum flow test against the Dynomax strait though muffler. It was amazing. The chambered Chrysler muffler flowed the same as the Dynomax. He welded up the muffler to the exhisting pipes..using it at the midpipe position. Then added a new Borla XR rear muffler. We started the car....it was SOOOOOO QUIET. I drove the car around....the power was the same...but, I could not believe how quiet it was........Jose explained that the Chrysler muffler is chambered, the exhaust pulses flowing though the chamber cancel the NOISE out.....

Sounds familiar...dont you think...

I've seen that story in a post elsewhere...not sure I really believe it. I'm pretty sure they would perform differently with pressure vs. vacuum with heat thrown into the mix. Anyway, here's a shot of the interior of a Borla XR1 sportsman I'll be using in my midpipe. You're looking through one end of the muffler. Straight through with a little "triangle' insert which is made out of the same preforated material as the main tube. I'm willing to bet the race version does not have this.

My Borla XR1 did not have this material in the flowstream. I thought I had the sportsman but not sure as I installed my Borla in the mp about 3 years ago, must have been a race XR1. My ears have been happy ever since I installed this mid-muffler.

Hey i have the same exhaust setup and i don't believe it's too loud. I drove it from Abilene TX to Daytona, and i enjoyed the drive.

My XR-1 Race muffler has three pipes in the middle. A picture is attached. My understanding is that the Race model is the quietest XR-1 muffler, and their internal construction seems to be in line with that. They probably flow about the same.

There was a muffler shoot-out in a Mustang magazine recently. The new Borla ProXS mufflers did very well (good power, among the quietest). The XR-1 also did well but were louder than the ProXS, and I don't know which XR-1 they used (though I suspect it was the Sportsman). All the mufflers outflowed a straight pipe, and they were all within 5 HP on an NA 370 RWHP Mustang. There was a large difference in noise levels. It seems that you can build a free-flowing exhaust system without making it super loud.

The turbo mini-van guy did some tests with a leaf blower or shop vac or something that seemed reasonable. However, I would be pretty suspicious of a test where a chambered OEM muffler flowed the same as a stright-thru muffler. I suspect a 1" Ford Festiva muffler would have had the same results. The difference won't show up until you get some major flow through the muffler.

why would the borla or dynomax not last long? what exactly happens to them? and why would the sebring muffler be immune to this?

Most mufflers have fiberglass packing and it only lasts a short time because of the rotary's intense exhaust heat.

Borlas are supposed to have SS and ceramic fabric packing.

s#!t what tipe of dinomax you used, because i use to have a oval dinomax ultraflo muffler and i had it for two years and the only reason i change it because i want a n1 muffler, but thinking about it i should it keep it. i never had problem of noise with it.

The Borla won't last because it is only stainless on the outside shell of the muffler, the inside will get destroyed by the heat. Edelbrock is one of the few mufflers that has SS throughout its entire construction and will last theoretically forever.

I take it Borla doesn't extend their million mile warranty to rotaries? A new muffler every two years would be OK with me, as long as they extend us the same warranty they always advertise.

I just e-mailed both Edelbrock and Borla, asking if either can handle the heat of a turbo rotary and if they could compare the two. I will post the replies when and if I get them.

All the metal in a Borla is SS. The packing is said to be SS and ceramic, but that is harder to tell from the outside.

I could clearly see the stainless fibers inside of my borla. A few were sticking out the baffle holes. FYI, this thing REALLY made my car much quieter. More quiet than with the sequentials, primary turbo only, and a resonated midpipe. I use the GReddy PE exhaust (first version). Nice bassy undertones, with a sweet, smooth, slightly fruity upper :-) Seriously, seems to take the "edge" off the rotaries exhaust note. Not as sharp sounding. Sounds more powerful in many ways. If you really want peace and quiet, the Borla plus the Racing Beat would probably be the way to go.

Yes, the single turbo with the borla is now more quiet than the sequential with a resonated midpipe. And that's when just the first turbo is "working". After the transition, the car would become considerably louder. Now, with the Borla and a GReddy PE, it's much quieter.

Okay, so finally - Which is the quietest combo for a single turbo with no cats?
