Aftermarket water pump
I have a 20b that I am putting into a Porsche 914. I purchased a large front mounted radiator and am concerned about the water pump being strong enough to flow all the coolant that will be in the system (long lines to the front and a massive radiator). I know the guys who do chevy V8 conversions have to upgrade their water pumps. Does anyone know how much the stock water pump flows? Is there an upgrade available from either Mazda or the aftermarket? Or am I looking at going with an electric pump as the only solution?

Rotaries in VW bugs do alright with the stock waterpump and a radiator up front. The 20B ought to be ok, but then I'm not 100% sure. Just keep an eye on water temps.

www.summitracing.com sells electric water pumps by Meiziere. They flow 55gpm. Is that sufficient? Is anyone running one of these now? It just says for rotary. I would imagine that it would work fine for a 20b. Anyways here's the pn, MEZ-WP316B

remember to drill a 1/4" hole in the thermostat, that way the coolant system doesnt "shock" (when it opens, it's getting freezing cold water in!)
To run an electric water-pump on a rotary, you'll need to fabricate a new take-off, altenator mount, and different fan-belt size. you need to use the old pump as a basis, and cut some sheet-metal to the same shape. This is so you can still use the same mounting points, and it also means it'll line-up with the waterways easier. You now need to fabricate some pipes onto the waterway holes, and feed them to the side, so theyre out of the way of the altenator pully. Connect up the pump, radiator, and heater (you'll need a water-heater now remember) and bleed it thoroughly!! Make sure the pump is at mid-way engine height, and make a T-join so you have a pipe higher than the radiator and engine - this makes it a lot easier to fill and remove any trapped air |
im running a mezeire on my 2nd gen drag car and it works great although man i wish they would come down on the price that goes on the housing. mezeire is out in san diego area, i live about a hour from them
