13BT without turbo
 

I saw a 13BT engine on sale and wondered if it would be feasible to modify to NA.
Does the 13BT have a lower compression ratio than the NA engines and if so what sort of power can one expect with the turbo removed?

8.5:1 for S4 and 9.0:1 for S5 (And FD I think).

With the turbo removed, expect it to run like ass.

to answer your question, yes it is possible to modify it for N/A.

i noticed that you are in South Africa. i can't remember his screen-name, but there is a gentleman down in your part of the world that did a streetported 13B-T (even has video of it running on the highway) with what appears to be great results. if i recall, he runs an 50 mm IDA setup AND the stock turbo rotors. it might do you some good to search and see if you can contact him.

anyway, i'd say do it. you probably won't be disappointed. you can make good power with the turbo rotors - higher compression would be somewhat better, but they are not necessary.

If I can't get my hands on a decent NA motor I'll grab the turbo one instead. That way I can always add the turbo system when I have the time and money.

what generation car is this engine going into?

i ask because i wasn't aware that you guys got the non-turbo motors over there and therefore would be a bit trickier to get your hands on one. also, if you're sure that you're going to want to turbocharge at a later date, then you'd be doing yourself a better service if you just get a 13B-T right off the bat. just an opinion ...

It's going into a VW Beetle which is why I'd like to use an NA motor at first.
Purchasing an EFI controller and doing all the turbo plumbing and tuning will easily triple the installation time and costs. I want to keep it simple to start with and then when I have the time and money I can play with the EFI and turbo setup.
I just wanted to know if it's feasible to run without the turbo so I can avoid having to purchase two motors.

all you need is the T2 engine, a header and (if you really don't want to just go ahead and do the EFI, then) a carbie setup. you won't need 2 motors.
